What does dock mean?

Dock refers to a dock-style building for repairing ships. After irrigation, ships can enter and exit, and after drainage, ships can be repaired on the dry bottom. Dock can be divided into dry dock, water injection dock and floating dock.

Wharf type:

Dry/dry dock

Dry dock is connected to land on three sides and water on one side, and its basic components are dock mouth, dock room and dock head. Dock is used for ships to enter and exit, and there are water retaining doors. The drainage and irrigation equipment of the dock is often built in the piers on both sides of the dock. The dock room is used for placing ships, and the bottom plate of the dock room is provided with keel piers and side piers for supporting the ships;

The dock head is the end opposite to the dock mouth, and its plane shape can be rectangular, semi-circular or diamond. The space of the dock head is a part of the dock room, where the propeller and tail shaft are assembled and disassembled. The dry dock is equipped with various power pipelines and auxiliary equipment such as lifting, derusting, painting and towing.

When the ship enters the dry dock for repair, firstly, water is injected into the dock with irrigation and drainage facilities. When the water level inside and outside the dock is even, open the dock door and slowly pull the boat into the dock with traction equipment. Then, drain the water in the dock and let the boat sit on the keel pier. When the repaired or built ship leaves the dock, firstly, fill the dock with water until the water level inside and outside the dock door is even, then open the dock door and guide the ship out of the dock.

Floating wharf:

It is a concave cabin that can move and sink. It can be used not only for ship repair and shipbuilding, but also for salvaging sunken ships and transporting deep-water ships through shallow waterways. China built the first 25,000-ton "Huangshan" floating dock at 1974. Total length 190m, height 15.8m, width 38.5m, maximum diving depth 13.2m and lifting force13,000t.

Can lift 25,000 ~ 30,000 tons of seagoing vessels for dock repair. The floating dock is highly automated and electrified. The lifting of the wharf is controlled by the central podium. There are power stations (lighting for towns with a population of100,000) and workshops for technicians, electricians and carpenters.
