Does the Air Force belong to the Department of Defense?

The Air Force does not belong to the Department of Defense.

China's Ministry of National Defense does not directly manage the air force, but is under the unified management of the Central Military Commission. The Ministry of National Defense is mainly responsible for the planning of military policies and actions, while the Air Force, as a part of the China People's Liberation Army, is responsible for the daily operation and management by the Central Military Commission.

In the United States, the Department of Defense is a government department, which is subordinate to the War Department, the Navy Department and the Air Force Department. All four ministers are civil servants. The highest military decision-making bodies are the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Army, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Naval Operations and the Joint Chiefs of Marine Corps.
