Dingbian County is located in the northwest of Shaanxi Province, at the westernmost end of Yulin City, at the junction of seven counties (banners) in four provinces (regions) of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Mongolia. As early as Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties, there were nomadic activities of primitive tribes. Border fixing in Qin and Han Dynasties was a part of the New Qin Dynasty. Daxing County was established in the Northern Wei Dynasty, renamed Wuyuan County in the Western Wei Dynasty, and then Yanzhou.

Tiejiaocheng Village, Zhang Qiao Town, Dingbian County, is the first stop of the Long March of the Central Red Army of Workers and Peasants from Gansu to Shaanxi. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, General Wang Zhen led the 359th Brigade to produce crude salt in Huamachi Salt Lake in Dingbian County, which became the main source of government revenue in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. 1June, 936, the Red Army was liberated by the Western Expedition. 1949 abolished the organizational system of Anbian County (1established County in May 936) and merged into Dingbian County.
