Since 1934, Guo Zuchao has been teaching for more than 50 years, during which he has been teaching medical statistics for nearly 50 years and can be called a great master. The large number of professional talents he has spent his whole life cultivating have spread all over the country in medical schools, scientific research institutions and other health departments. Among them, those who have obtained senior professional titles account for about 1/3 of the current number of senior professional titles in China. More than 20 graduate students have been directly trained by Guo Zuchao, including the first doctoral student in health statistics awarded by China. The number of graduate students (including doctoral students) trained by Guo Zuchao's students has long exceeded the number of graduate students trained by him. This generation of teachers has formed a sizable ladder of professional teams, and has greatly influenced the structure of medical statistics professionals in China.
Guo Zuchao cultivates students very strictly and meticulously. In the early 1950s, he explained and demonstrated in detail the key points of operating a hand-cranked computer to a trainee, including the position, posture, tightness, angle of holding the handle, how to use wrist force skillfully when turning, etc. The subtleties were astonishing. Out of reach. This not only trains professional skills, but also cultivates academic attitudes. After such a professional education, this trainee has not only abided by it for nearly 40 years, but also taught his students accordingly. Guo Zuchao selects talents in an eclectic way. In 1949, he openly recruited medical statistics assistants and selected a primary school teacher among many candidates. After training, he soon became his right-hand assistant.
The growth process of the first doctoral student he trained is another vivid example in this regard. In 1974, Guo Zuchao saw that China was about to have a serious shortage of teachers in the health statistics profession and planned to select some young people to supplement it. At that time, this young man was still in the first grade of technical secondary school. Guo Zuchao had a unique insight. Through calm observation, he discovered that although he was young and immature and had a weak foundation, he was able to work hard and show a strong ambition and certain determination. Self-learning ability. Guo Zuchao first enthusiastically guided him to remediate basic knowledge and study foreign languages, and then sent him to attend a medical statistics high school in other places, and earnestly told him to study hard and persevere. Later, when the student went to work in the cadre school, Guo Zuchao asked him to seize all available time and insist on professional studies. He also assigned him to translate an English statistics monograph. He also stipulated that he should send back a number of translations at regular intervals. Guo Zuchao I would correct it myself and then send it back to him. In this way, one was willing to teach and the other was willing to learn. This student quickly improved. Soon, he finally passed the master's degree program of Guo Zuchao, and then passed the master's degree in statistics of the University of London, England. He later obtained a master's degree of science from the school and joined the Royal Statistical Society. After the student returned to China, he was admitted to Guo Zuchao's doctoral program. In July 1988, this self-taught young man, who was personally selected and guided by Guo Zuchao, was promoted to associate professor without exception. In the 14 years from 1974 to 1988, when he was a first-year student in a technical secondary school, he went through middle school, university, and graduate school. He obtained two master's degrees and a doctorate at home and abroad, and became an associate professor at the age of 33.
