Geological Structure

Weicheng District belongs to the Weihe River Fault Basin, which was formed by the substantial uplift of the Qinling Mountains during the Cenozoic Himalayan Movement. It was not until the Quaternary tectonic movement and various external forces that the northern loess plateau and the southern alluvial plain were differentiated. The structural basis of the northern loess plateau is the Liquan fault step part of the Weibei fault block. Slow relative uplift occurred during the Quaternary and Pleistocene, and the former Tertiary lake basin emerged from the water.

Because the terrain is flat, it is conducive to the accumulation of loess, so the loess layers of the Middle and Late Pleistocene were accumulated on top of the lacustrine sedimentary layers of the Neogene and Early Pleistocene. It covers an area of ??80-100 meters, and 7-8 layers of ancient soil have developed due to climate fluctuations. The Quaternary sediments are 200-400 meters thick.
