Bayannur is Mongolian, meaning "rich lake". It is named after the famous freshwater lake Wuliangsuhai and many lakes.

Bayannaoer City, a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia, is located in the west of Inner Mongolia, between 4013'-42 28' north latitude and10512'-109 53' east longitude, bordering Baotou City and Alashan League in the west.

Bayannur has Urad grassland in the north, Yinshan Mountain in the middle and Hetao Plain in the south. It belongs to a typical mid-temperate continental monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 3.7℃ ~ 7.6℃. The territory is rich in mineral resources, wind energy resources and sunshine resources, and the pyrite reserves rank first in China, making it one of the regions with the richest wind energy resources in China.

Bayannur is named for its rich Jilantai salt pond (rich in Mongolian means Bayan and lake means Naoer). It is called "Bayan", and Bayannaoer is located in the Hetao area where the Yellow River is full of disasters, and it is called "the granary of China".

Bayannaoer, formerly known as Bameng, is a newly-built League after the establishment of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. 1 April, 956 the State Council decided to transfer Bayinhaote Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture and Ejina Banner under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which was formally established on June1day of the same year.
