Bayannur is Mongolian, meaning "rich lake". It is named after the famous freshwater lake Wuliangsuhai and many lakes.

Bayannaoer City, a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia, is located in the west of Inner Mongolia, between 4013'-42 28' north latitude and10512'-109 53' east longitude, bordering Baotou City and Alashan League in the west.

Bayannur has Urad grassland in the north, Yinshan Mountain in the middle and Hetao Plain in the south. It belongs to a typical mid-temperate continental monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 3.7℃ ~ 7.6℃. The territory is rich in mineral resources, wind energy resources and sunshine resources, and the pyrite reserves rank first in China, making it one of the regions with the richest wind energy resources in China.
