Are the medical insurance card and social security card the same card?

Legal analysis: social security card and medical insurance card are not the same card. Their functions are different. The medical insurance card can only be used for medical reimbursement and inquiry, and the social security card can be used for other types of insurance besides medical insurance. At the same time, the role of social security card is wider than that of medical insurance card, which covers the role of medical insurance card and has functions that medical insurance card does not have. Patients can use it to enjoy old-age care, medical insurance and so on. The state establishes social insurance systems such as basic old-age insurance, basic medical insurance, industrial injury insurance, unemployment insurance and maternity insurance, so as to guarantee citizens' right to receive material assistance from the state and society in accordance with the law when they are old, sick, injured, unemployed and have children.

Legal basis: Article 64 of People's Republic of China (PRC) Social Insurance Law includes basic endowment insurance fund, basic medical insurance fund, industrial injury insurance fund, unemployment insurance fund and maternity insurance fund. In addition to the basic medical insurance fund and maternity insurance fund combined accounting, other social insurance funds are accounted for separately according to social insurance types. Social insurance funds implement a unified accounting system throughout the country. The social insurance fund is earmarked for special purposes, and no organization or individual may occupy or misappropriate it. The basic old-age insurance fund will gradually implement national overall planning, and other social insurance funds will gradually implement provincial overall planning. The specific time and steps shall be stipulated by the State Council.
