I don't think waiting for the notice after the interview means that there is no chance. Generally, there are the following situations:

The interviewer doesn't think you are suitable, but he wants to save you some face and tell you euphemistically. I hope you can understand. As mentioned above, this possibility is relatively large.

The interviewer thinks you are excellent, but several other interviewers are also good. He can't choose yet. He needs to make a comparison before making a decision. This situation is not uncommon if recruiting senior positions. If you arbitrarily think there is no hope, you may miss the opportunity.

The interviewer invited several people to interview the same position. Although he thinks you are not bad, you are not as good as he thinks and want to make a decision at once. He wants to see how the next few people are. Similar to the above situation, he needs to make a comparison before making a decision.

4. It is also possible that the interviewer's level is not high, and he has no right to make a decision and decide whether you will stay or not. He needs to review your information to the leader and let him make up his mind. Maybe you need a second interview.

Of course, it is the relatively high position that makes it so complicated.

If you are interviewing for a very good company, don't give up easily. Don't think that it's hopeless for the interviewer to let you wait for the notice. This is too arbitrary, you may miss the opportunity.
