How to report dual citizenship

Literally understood, the scope of this report does not involve overseas permanent residents holding green cards or maple leaf cards, that is, people who have immigrated but have not yet become foreign nationals. When I asked the local public security bureau in China whether I need to cancel my household registration after getting a green card, I got this reply: "If you have a green card, you have lived in the United States for a long time. The household registration refers to Your place of residence, if you no longer live here, you must cancel it.” If you want to return to China to live in the future, you must “cancel your green card and apply for hukou again.”

According to Article 7 of the "Implementation Rules of the Exit-Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China":

After citizens living in the country have completed the visa or entry permit for the country, , should go through household registration procedures before leaving the country. Those who leave the country to settle down must go to the local police station or household registration office to cancel their household registration. If you leave the country for a short period of time, you should register your temporary household registration and restore your permanent household registration in your original place of residence with your passport upon return. In other words, people who leave the country to settle should also cancel their Chinese household registration.

"Shanghai Permanent Resident Registration" Article 12 of the Household Registration Management Measures stipulates: Residents of this city who have settled abroad or have settled abroad shall apply for cancellation of their household registration in accordance with the relevant regulations of the state and this city's entry-exit management.
