History of Kitami City

1872: Named ノツケウシ村.

1875: The Chinese name was decided as Yefuniu Village.

1897: The Hokkosha immigration group run by Sakamoto Ryoma's nephew Sakamoto Naohiro in Tosa Province (now Kochi Prefecture) established the Hokkosha Farm with 112 households, including civilians and farmers. 597 households of soldiers and civilians cultivated land here. At the same time, a field for the chief executive of Shengyanchang Village was set up.

February 1, 1909: Nofuniu Village and Shengganchang Village were merged into Nofuniu Village and became a second-class village in Hokkaido. [3]

1911: The railway between Ikeda and Nosukeyu on the Abashiri Line was opened to traffic.

April 1, 1915:

Became a first-class village in Hokkaido, and at the same time Takeka Village (later Rubian Rui Town) and Chito Village (now Chito Town and Kunkofu Town) was divided into independent villages. Tokoro Village, Shoniu Village, Taicha Miao Village, and Shoishigaku Village were merged into Tokoro Village, and at the same time became a second-class village in Hokkaido.

April 1, 1916: The name in kanji was changed to the official name and reorganized into Nofugyu Town. April 1, 1921: Duanno Village (later Duanno Town) and Aiuchi Village were separated and established as independent villages.

June 15, 1921: Wuhua Village was reorganized and renamed Rubianrui Town.

April 1, 1938: Ruherui Town became a first-class town in Hokkaido.

June 10, 1942: It was restructured into a municipal system and renamed Kitami City. It was the first city established in the Abashiri branch office.

November 1, 1950: Tokoro Village was reorganized into Tokoro Town.

September 30, 1956: Incorporated into Aiuchi Village.

September 1, 1961: Duanye Village was reorganized into Duanye Town.

April 1979: Population exceeded 100,000.

January 13th to January 16th, 2004: A record-breaking snowstorm occurred, with 171 cm of snowfall.

March 5, 2006: Merged with Ruherui Town, Hatanno Town, and Tokoro Town to form the newly established Kitami City.
