Richmond's colored population accounts for 59% of the city, making it the second highest city in Canada. More than half of the population in this city are Asians, most of whom immigrated to Canada from Hongkong, Taiwan Province Province and Chinese mainland in 1990s. Other Asians living in Richmond come from India, the Philippines and Japan. Among them, the Japanese settled in Steveston in the south of Richmond as early as19th century. However, after the 1942 Pearl Harbor incident, the Japanese residents of this community were sent to concentration camps in BC inland and Alberta, and their property was confiscated and then sold during World War II, which led to the unrecognizable Stevestone community after the war.
According to Statistics Canada, the average life expectancy of Richmond residents is the longest in Canada, reaching 83.4 years. It is also the region with the lowest proportion of obesity and smoking in Canada.
