The middle and upper reaches of the Lion River are rocky mountains and rivers covered with loess, which only produce flood runoff during heavy rain and dry up without water at ordinary times. The width of the middle and upper reaches of the Shizi River is generally more than 50m, and the average gradient of the river (channel) is l5‰, with serious steep slopes and sudden floods. The downstream river width 10-25m, with a gradient of about 5‰. Most of the places where rivers flow are flat valleys in hilly areas. The rivers are gentle and tortuous, and the general flow direction is northwest to southeast. In Chengjiagou-Song Cun reach, the river is basically the boundary between the two counties, but due to the swing of Pingchuan River, the river does not completely conform to the county boundary. The main tributaries on the right bank of Niehe River are Xitang River, Nannieshui River and Song Cun River, and the main tributaries on the left bank are Gaozhaisi River, Yongquan River and Mamu River.
