Syria is an Arab country.

1, regional position

Syria is located in the west of the Asian continent and on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Turkey in the north, Iraq in the southeast, Jordan in the south, Lebanon and Israel in the southwest, and Cyprus across the sea in the west. The coastline is 183km long and the land area is 185 180km2 (including the Golan Heights occupied by Israel, about 1200km2).

2. Topography

The westernmost part of Syria is the northern extension of the West Asia Rift Zone, which consists of four north-south longitudinal zones, namely, coastal narrow plains, Alawite mountains, Assi Valley and eastern mountains. The eastern part of Mount Lebanon is a vast plateau, and the northern half of Syria is a grassland. The southeast half is located in the Syrian desert and is a part of the Arabian Plateau. Shehe Mountain in the southwest is the highest mountain in China, with an altitude of 28 14m. The Euphrates River flows through the east, flows into the Persian Gulf through Iraq, and the Ashi River flows into the Mediterranean Sea through the west and Turkey.

3. Climate characteristics

Syria's climate is relatively dry, with three-fifths of the countries' annual rainfall less than 25mm, mainly due to high mountains. Northern Syria has a subtropical Mediterranean climate, while southern Syria has a tropical desert climate. In desert areas, there is little rainfall in winter and it is dry and hot in summer. The lowest temperature is below 0℃, and the highest temperature is around 40℃. The average annual precipitation is above 1 1,000 mm in coastal areas and only 1 1,000 mm in southern areas.
