Types of work visas in France

Short-term residence visa

Short-term residence visas allow non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens to stay in France for no more than 90 days. However, not everyone needs to obtain a short-term residence visa. Citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and other specific countries can stay visa-free for up to 90 days.

Whether you enjoy visa-free treatment or not, you may still need to apply for a work permit unless you are engaged in the following related industries.

Sports, culture, art or science activities

Conference, seminar or trade show

Production/distribution of movies or audio-visual programs and records

Teaching activities with French teachers

Models and artistic modeling

Audit/expert evaluation in information technology, management, finance, insurance, construction and engineering.

In all other industries, your employer or potential employer needs to submit a formal form to the French authorities to apply for a work permit before you apply for a visa. After successfully applying for a work permit, you need to attach the work permit to your visa application.

The short-term residence visa cannot be extended, and once it expires, you must leave France. If you decide to stay in France for more than 90 days, you must submit a long-term residence visa application from your country of origin.

Long-stay visa

Different kinds of work contracts

You can apply for a long-term residence permit after you arrive in France. A visa entitles you to live in France for more than 90 days.

All foreign citizens outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland need to apply for this visa. Like a short-term residence visa, your employer or potential employer must apply for a work permit for you before you start applying for a long-term residence visa.

residence permit

If you receive a long-term residence visa marked "cartedeséjouràsolliciter", you must apply for a residence permit within two months of your arrival in France. If you are in Paris, you can go to the local police headquarters. If you live in a foreign country, you can apply through the relevant provinces. Contact the province in advance to confirm what documents are needed to apply for residence certificates.

VLS-TS

If you get a long-term visa (VLS-TS) equivalent to a residence permit, you don't need to apply for a residence permit in the first year in France, but you must register with the French Immigration and Citizenship Bureau (OFII) within three months of your arrival in France. You should also receive the relevant registration form when you receive the visa, but it may be easier to register online.

Talent passport

Depending on your field of work, you may be eligible to apply for passeporttalent, which allows you to stay in France for up to four years.
