How to study abroad through work-study program?

For most students studying in the United States, part-time job is an indispensable part of the school. Part-time job can not only help the shortage of living expenses and study fees, but also be a learning opportunity to integrate into the local society. Why not do it?

Take America as an example:

When it comes to working in America, washing dishes in restaurants immediately comes to everyone's mind. Indeed, many parents and students have asked me if international students want to earn some extra money in their spare time and go to restaurants to wash dishes. The actual situation is not what we see in movies and TV. International students working in the United States are subject to many restrictions in the United States, which is stipulated by American law. Students with visa F 1 have three job opportunities: part-time job on campus, restricted off-campus work and internship.

part-time jobs/work

It mainly refers to the work that is employed by American universities with a working time of no more than 20 hours per week (except summer vacation), such as going to the library to help sort out books, being a waiter, going to the laboratory to help with experiments, going to the gym to be a waiter, and helping a professor collect literature. These are common job opportunities on campus. You can find this information through the school website or acquaintances, or you can pay attention to the bulletin boards, departments, gymnasiums and libraries, computer rooms, schools' banks and other places on campus. Generally, recruitment information is released. Getting a job on campus means that you are not only a student of the school, but also an employee of the school, and you have joined the salary list of the school. Part-time wages are generally hourly wages, and the wages obtained become wages, usually once a week; In a few cases, the monthly salary is called salary.

Cooperative education (cooperative education)

In order to enable students to combine what they have learned from books with their practical work, some schools offer work-study combination courses, such as studying in class for one semester, then working for one semester, and then returning to class to continue their studies. This way of combining work with study is called cooperative education, or "co-op" for short. Joining a cooperative that interests you can learn about the application of certain skills in society, deepen your understanding of disciplines, and better plan your future career development. Not only that, but also a certain income can be obtained. So after you enter school, you should pay attention to whether there is a cooperative in your school, and don't miss a good opportunity.

Part-time job.

American law has strict rules for international students to work outside the school during their study. Simply put, the job application must be related to your major or course, and must be recognized by the relevant departments of your school. In this way, everyone can understand why it is actually impossible to work in a restaurant, or it can't be "legally" operated. If you secretly go to work outside the school, you can only stay in the United States if all the insiders (including your employer and those who heard you mention it) are confidential and the school and the Immigration Bureau don't know: once you work illegally, you are forbidden to enter the United States again for life. Therefore, I solemnly advise you here, don't take risks, it is not cost-effective to lose your future in order to solve the problem of lack of money.

Off-campus legal work is called CPT (in-class training), and I believe you will often hear this word in the future. About CPT, there are some basic common sense and regulations as follows:

The purpose of 1 CPT is to provide off-campus internship opportunities for students with f 1 visas, so that they can better apply their professional knowledge to practical work situations during their study.

2 CPT must be closely related to the major or course studied, and it is a necessary part of completing studies.

3 if it is a paid CPT (that is, paid), you must submit an application to the relevant department of the school (usually the international student office); If it is free, it is generally not necessary to apply, but it is absolutely not allowed to accept any form of remuneration.

Full-time students who have been in school for one year are eligible to participate in CPT.

In terms of working hours, the working hours per week during the summer vacation shall not exceed 40 hours, and at other times shall not exceed 20 hours per week.

The cumulative time of 6 CPT is at most 12 months. If it reaches 12 months, you may not apply for internship opportunities after graduation (OPT, see below).

CPT less than 12 months is not included in OPT. Therefore, if you want to make the best use of internship opportunities, you must control CPT within 12 months.

Regarding the application of CPT, each school has its own requirements. In addition, it also involves the issue of personal income tax. For details, please consult the international students' office and relevant personnel in the department.

Foreign students studying in the United States can work 20 hours a week on campus if they fail to find a job. If they have applied for a social security number and obtained a work permit, they can work 20 hours a week outside school, and they can also work all day on holidays such as Saturday and Sunday.
