Where does the Far East mean?

The Far East generally includes today's East Asia and Southeast Asia, namely Afghanistan, east of Kazakhstan, north of Australia, west of the Pacific Ocean and south of the Arctic Ocean.

A general term for the easternmost region of Asia when western countries began to expand eastward. Generally, it includes eastern China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines and the Russian Pacific coast, that is, all areas east of Pamirs.

The name "Far East" is related to East Asia. During the British Empire, this word was very popular in English, and it was a general term for the east of England and India.

Before World War I, the Near East generally refers to the surrounding areas of the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East refers to northwest Asia and central Asia, and the Far East refers to countries and regions in the western Pacific and the eastern Indian Ocean, including China, Japan, North Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

There are similar names in many European languages, including French, Spanish, Italian, German and Dutch.

In the language of oriental scholars, the Far East is not only a geographical concept, but also a cultural concept. For example, Australia and New Zealand, which belong to the western cultural circle, will never be called a part of the Far East, even though these countries are farther east from Europe than many East Asian countries. In this sense, the Far East is a general term for countries belonging to the oriental cultural circle.

After World War II, the use of the word "Far East" in western countries was restricted to some extent, because it embodied a Eurocentric thought and was associated with European countries' aggression and colonial activities in Asia.

In economic research, use more precise terms, such as East Asia and Southeast Asia, or the wider Pan-Pacific region. The Near East and the Middle East are collectively referred to as the Middle East, usually referring to Israel and Arab countries and regions.
