The origin of Datong place names

During the reign of Emperor Yangdi, the Datong River was built in the northern part of Urad Qianqi, Inner Mongolia, in order to defend against the Turkic attack. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the Shatuo people migrated to China, where Datong overseas Chinese settled, meaning "Great Harmony in the World". Since then, the name of Datong has remained unchanged.

Datong, as the sub-central city and the second largest city in Shanxi Province, is located in the center of Datong Basin in the north of Shanxi Province, at the junction of Shanxi, Hebei and Mongolia provinces, and on the northeast edge of the Loess Plateau.
