On July 1, 1952, the Xingxian Prefecture was abolished and the county was returned to the Yuci Prefecture. On July 1, 1954, it merged with Lishi County to form Lishan County. After Zhongyang County was merged into Lishan County on November 10, 1958, it was renamed Lishi County. Fangshan County was restored on May 1, 1971. The county seat is located in Getong Town, which belongs to the Luliang area. In May 2004, Luliang was evacuated and established as a city, and Fangshan County came under the jurisdiction of Luliang City.
