What do you mean by discovering the new continent?

The New World is what Europeans call this new continent after discovering America and its adjacent islands at the end of 15. Before the discovery of the new continent, Europeans were not familiar with the American continent. They generally believed that there were only three continents in the world: Europe, Asia and Africa, and no other continents existed.

In recent decades, the name "New World" has been regarded by some people as Eurocentrism, which makes people feel as if only the European view is correct. Therefore, its application is limited to some specific occasions: only when Columbus's voyage to the West and Spain's conquest of Yucatan Peninsula are discussed from a historical perspective, and the species of all continents are discussed from a biological perspective, people will use the word "New World".

Another view holds that the "new world" is "new" because it is relatively new to human beings: human beings have lived in the "old world" in Europe, Asia and Africa for much longer than people have lived in the American continent; Therefore, when the first ancient humans immigrated to America, they arrived in the "New World".

Although the American continent is a part of the New World, Australia may be divided into the New World or the Old World under different circumstances, especially New Zealand, because it was just inhabited by generations before Columbus arrived in America. From a biological point of view, Australia belongs to neither the new world nor the old world, because the animals and plants on it are far from Eurasia or America.
