How to protect and improve the ecological environment in the gorge reservoir area?

The Three Gorges reservoir area is an extremely important sensitive eco-economic zone in China. Strengthening the protection of ecological environment and promoting the sustainable development of agriculture in the Three Gorges reservoir area is of great significance for improving the ecological environment, promoting regional economic development and scientifically resettling immigrants in the reservoir area.

The Ministry of Science and Technology attaches great importance to the scientific and technological work of ecological environment protection and agricultural development in the Three Gorges reservoir area. Since the "Ninth Five-Year Plan", the Ministry of Science and Technology has successively launched projects such as "Special Science and Technology Development Project for Three Gorges Immigrants" and "Research and Demonstration of Key Technologies for Ecological Environment Security and Eco-economic System Reconstruction in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area", focusing on ecological environment protection, research and development of characteristic resources in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, and introduction and demonstration of new technologies suitable for reservoir development. Through the implementation of various projects, a number of key technologies have been broken through in citrus breeding, sustainable development of herbivorous animal husbandry, development of traditional Chinese medicine resources and ecological environment protection in the reservoir area, and a model project has been established, which has promoted the development of related industries and laid a good technical foundation for ecological environment protection and coordinated economic and social development in the reservoir area. Taking the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in Chongqing as an example, since the implementation of the Three Gorges Resettlement Science and Technology Development Project for ten years, more than 60 million yuan has been invested in scientific research and more than 2 billion yuan has been invested, which has played an important role in promoting the adjustment of industrial structure, upgrading the industrialization level of characteristic resources in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area and improving the quality of ecological environment. In addition, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the the State Council Three Gorges Office jointly promulgated the Three Gorges Science and Technology Action Plan (2003-20 10). By strengthening the connection and support of national science and technology plans such as "863" and "tackling key scientific and technological problems", we will strive to promote the transformation of resource advantages and scientific and technological achievements in the reservoir area into industrialization advantages and improve the scientific and technological innovation and self-development ability of the reservoir area.

In order to conscientiously implement the spirit of the important instructions of the Central Committee on the stability of the Three Gorges resettlement and the deployment of the Outline of the National Medium-and Long-term Science and Technology Development Plan, during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with the the State Council Three Gorges Office and other relevant departments, will further increase scientific and technological support for the Three Gorges Project construction and resettlement development. Promote social and economic development and ecological environment protection in the Three Gorges reservoir area, and ensure the smooth completion of the Three Gorges Project. Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with relevant departments, will hold the "Summary of Science and Technology Promoting the Development of Three Gorges Immigrants and the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Work Deployment Meeting", focusing on the deployment of "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" science and technology to promote the development of Three Gorges Immigrants and counterpart support. It is suggested to set up a separate research project on key technologies of ecological environment protection and sustainable utilization of agricultural resources in the Three Gorges reservoir area, and the relevant contents will be considered in the overall scientific and technological work arrangement of the Three Gorges project construction and resettlement development.
