The theme of "The Train Home" is the families of migrant workers working in Guangzhou, China. Fan Lixin's long documentary "The Train Going Home" records the journey of Zhang Changhua's family to visit relatives during the Spring Festival in the past three years, and shows the contradiction between the sufferings, affection and livelihood of migrant workers. Fan Lixin believes that the economic and urban prosperity of contemporary China is actually based on the sacrifice of migrant workers. He said: "Migrant workers are the lowest and most vulnerable group. In order to take care of their families and stay away from their hometown, they go to work in other places and leave their children at home to take care of their parents. Being together for many years has caused emotional estrangement between them and their children. Every year, they travel across mountains and rivers just to reunite with their families during the Spring Festival. This train home is a portrayal of the hard life of thousands of migrant workers' families in Qian Qian. "

Fan Lixin not only established a family-like relationship with Zhang Changhua's family who was trapped by the snowstorm in Guangzhou Railway Station in 2008, but also got on the "home train" for him to return home. Fan Lixin, who immigrated to Canada in 2006, came to China to shoot three months later with the documentary "Up the River" which won many international awards. After filming the film Yan, he began to film The Train Home, integrating into the world of migrant workers with urban youth as the background, and finally becoming a member of his family.

The current Canadian producer was surprised at the acceptance of him by the Zhang family. Fan Lixin said: "They don't understand that once China people accept you, they really treat you as one of their own!" The cultural differences between China and the West are also reflected in his role as a documentary director. He said: "There is a scene in the film where JiaHe Zhang's daughter is fighting fiercely. I hesitated for a few seconds. Should I stick to the identity of documentary director and stay out of natural events, or should I pull away? After thinking for a while, I decided to rush in and pull them away. This is what I must do as a China person with a sense of morality. "

Fear and anxiety

Fan Lixin's The Train Home shows the unknown side of China's fast-developing modern life. However, even in a developed country with rich people's livelihood like the Netherlands, happiness is not necessarily within reach. The famous Dutch documentary director Michiel van Erp's Angst presents six Amsterdam residents who are troubled by phobias. Although they don't have to leave their homes like migrant workers to survive, they are trapped in their own fears. Some people are afraid to go out, some feel dirty, and take seven baths a day. Michiel van Erp said that these people's phobias are sudden, and once they take root, they cannot be cured. Drugs and psychotherapy are of limited help in improving the condition. He said: "Although it is set in Amsterdam, I believe that the situation described in the film can also happen in other big cities. The panic caused by the media and the excessive emphasis on the' success' model in modern life have put a lot of pressure on people. "

Michiel van Erp hopes that this film can arouse people's reflection on modern life and draw people's attention to the increasingly common urban disease "phobia". But as a documentary director, he believes that his real mission is to show the tenacity of human nature and the courage to face difficulties. He said: "these people may never recover, but their determination to face fear is worth learning!" "
