What's the difference between TOEFL, IELTS and GRE? How simple is it?

"TOEFL" is an exam to test your English level in North America. TOEFL is proposed and managed by the Educational Testing Center in Princeton, New Jersey, which is a private non-profit organization. If your mother tongue is not English, some colleges and universities will have certain requirements for TOEFL scores. However, getting a high score in TOEFL does not mean that you will be admitted or have a good academic prospect.

The full name of GRE is Graduate Entrance Examination. GRE is a postgraduate entrance examination offered by educational testing service.

The full name of ielts is International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Like TOEFL, IELTS is an international English proficiency test, which is jointly managed by Cambridge University Examination Center, British Council and Australian University Agency for International Development. In Europe and North America, more and more universities are beginning to accept IELTS scores. Immigration bureaus in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and other countries regard IELTS test scores as the only standard to measure English language ability of skilled immigrants and other immigrants.

IELTS is divided into two modes:

Academic is used to test whether the English level of candidates can study undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English environment, which is somewhat similar to TOEFL.

General training focuses on evaluating whether candidates have the basic English skills needed to survive in English-speaking countries, that is, survival English.

TOEFL is a compulsory test for going to America. If you want to enter an American university, you have to take the SAT. If you apply for a postgraduate degree, you must take the GRE exam. If you go to Commonwealth countries, you only need to take IELTS (A for studying abroad and G for immigrants).
