Today, let’s compare states in the United States and European countries.

I found 8 social-related indicators to compare the development levels of the United States and European countries. The data comes from the World Bank, US CDC, US Census Bureau, Eurostat, United Nations Population Division, "Global Burden of Disease", ourworldindata website, etc.

This is an administrative division of the United States, including only the 50 states and the capital, Washington, District of Columbia, and does not include overseas territories.

This is the distribution of European countries. Including Cyprus, there are 45 countries in Europe. The Vatican has a special status. The Vatican in the picture below is mostly blank because there is no data about it. Although only a quarter of Russia's territory is located in Europe, the following data is for Russia as a whole. After all, Russia's data will not be compiled by continent.

Median population age

The median age of the U.S. population is 37.7 years old, while that of Europe as a whole is 41.7 years old.

There are 3 states in the United States where the median age of the population is 30-35 years old, most states are 35-40 years old, the Northeast and Florida are 40-45 years old, and there are no states over 45 years old.

Most European countries are between 40 and 45 years old. Germany, Italy, and Greece are over 45 years old. The largest median age in Europe and the largest country in the world is Monaco, which is as high as 55 years old.

Life expectancy

Life expectancy, which is the life expectancy at birth, is an estimate calculated based on the mortality rate of the population of all ages in that year. Life expectancy in 2021 refers to how many years a person born in 2021 can live on average if he lives according to the death pattern in 2021. Life expectancy is regarded as an important indicator of social development level.

Most states in the United States are between 75 and 80 years old, and only a handful of states are over 80 years old. The highest state in Hawaii is only 82 years old. It only relies on a large number of Asians to reach this level. Asians are the United States’ The ethnic group with the highest life expectancy is over 85 years old, and the lowest life expectancy is for African Americans, only 74 years old.

The life expectancy in the United States is not in line with the economic level. The main reason is that the mortality rate is too high. It is due to poor social security, the proliferation of D drugs, and unhealthy diet, which leads to excessive obesity and various diseases. The U.S. medical system is also imperfect, and it has not yet achieved universal health insurance. Life expectancy in the United States has continued to decline in the past two years, from 79.1 years in 2019 to 77.2 years in 2021.

Life expectancy in Eastern European countries is generally low, with Russia and Moldova even less than 70 years old. Life expectancy in Western, Northern and Southern European countries is generally higher than 80 years. Monaco is the country with the highest life expectancy in the world, reaching 86 years.

Russia’s life expectancy has always been low because the male mortality rate is too high. Russia’s life expectancy has dropped by 4.5 years in the past two years, from 74 years in 2019 to 69.5 years in 2021.

Proportion of white European Americans

White Americans (including white Latinos) account for 61.6% of the total population, excluding white Latinos, accounting for 57.8%. There are seven states with whites accounting for more than 90%, with the highest in Maine at 94%. The lowest is in Hawaii, where even Latino whites account for less than 40%.

Most European countries are above 90%, and a few countries that absorb a large number of immigrants are between 80% and 90%. Although France does not count ethnicity in the census, there are still many agencies that do.

Obesity rate

The obesity rate among adults is mostly 25%-30% in the western states of the United States, and more than 30% in the central and eastern states. The high obesity rate in Americans is related to their diet. The American diet is dominated by high-sugar and fried foods, such as cola, French fries, fried chicken, burgers, donuts, ice cream, chocolate, cream, soft candies, various cakes, etc. Yes, the heat is so high. The overall homicide rate in Europe is 4.3 per 100,000. Most countries in Western and Southern Europe are below 1, Central Europe and the Balkans are 1-5, Eastern Europe is higher, mostly above 5, and Ukraine reaches 100,000. 12, Russia is as high as 15.2 parts per 100,000. Gunshot death toll

This shooting includes gun homicides, suicides and accidents. The only countries in Europe with more than 1,500 gun deaths are France and Russia.

France and the UK have similar populations, but the number of gun deaths in France is about 2,100, while in the UK there are only more than 160. This is related to the intensity of gun control. Germany, the most populous country in the European Union, has just over 1,000 people, and Russia, the most populous country in Europe, has about 2,500 people.

Both California and Texas in the United States have more than 3,000 people. Texas has the most, with about 3,700 people. It ranks 12th in the world, more than South Africa.

Prison rate

The number of prisoners in the United States is about 2.1 million, ranking first in the world, accounting for 1/4 of the total number of prisoners in the world. The incarceration rate in most states in the United States is above 300 per 100,000, and the lower Mississippi River states are higher, which may be related to the homicide rate mentioned earlier.

Most European countries are below 200 parts per 100,000. Only Russia can compare with most states in the United States.

The United States can be described as crushing. All states are above 10 parts per 100,000, with the highest in Virginia reaching 81 parts per 100,000. States near the Appalachian Mountains are all frighteningly high. In terms of death toll, California has the highest death toll, reaching 9,000, Florida also has more than 7,000, and New York and Texas both have close to 5,000.

Most countries in Europe are below 5 parts per 100,000. The highest is Estonia, which reaches 9.8 parts per 100,000, which does not exceed 10. The United Kingdom is divided into 4 parts (the source data are also separated). Scotland and Wales are higher than England and Northern Ireland. Scotland reaches 9.2 parts per 100,000, Wales also has 5.4 parts per 100,000, and England and Northern Ireland are both 3 points.

Judging from the above indicators, both in terms of development level and social security, Europe is better, and Western Europe is far better than the United States.
