Population status of Siberian tiger
According to the estimation of WCS Russian scientists, at the end of 19, there were about 2,000-3,000 Siberian tigers in the world, while there were about1200-2,400 in China.
With the collapse of the Qing dynasty and the opening of the restricted area, a large number of immigrants from all over the country moved to the northeast, and the Northeast Tiger also experienced unprecedented catastrophe. Due to the increase of population, the decrease of forest area and uncontrolled hunting, the number of Siberian tigers has been greatly reduced, and its distribution range has also rapidly retreated northward.
In 1930s, there were more than 500 Siberian tigers, most of which were distributed in China.
After 1950s, the tiger-catching movement in China and the population of forest areas increased sharply, and the Siberian tiger was forced to move to the Russian Far East with less interference. The southwest border has retreated to Huifa River basin and Ji 'an and Hunjiang areas in Jilin Province.
1953- 1957, the field survey by the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that the number of Siberian tigers in China was less than 200.
1974- 1976 During the investigation period, there were no tigers in Ji 'an County in Huifa River Basin and the upper reaches of Yalu River, and only six Siberian tigers were left in Fusong County. At this point, the western boundary of the Northeast Tiger distribution area has retreated to the east of Fusong.
198 1- 1984, the distribution area of Siberian tiger in Changbai Mountain was fragmented, forming several isolated distribution areas. This means that it will be difficult for the Northeast Tiger to find a mate and continue its race. At the end of 1980s, tigers in Changbai Mountain were basically extinct, and only a few individuals survived in Hunchun City, Jilin Province.
1998 and 1999 showed that the number of Siberian tigers in Changbai Mountain area of Jilin Province was 7-9, and the distribution area was reduced from sporadic distribution in Changbai Mountain area in the early 1990s to two narrower distribution areas.
From 6: 5438 to 9: 99, an international investigation team participating in WCS conducted a field investigation in Heilongjiang for more than two months. The results showed that the number of wild Amur tigers in Heilongjiang province dropped sharply, from more than 400 in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China to 5-7 at that time.
On the evening of February 26th, 20 14, two Siberian tigers illegally domesticated by individuals arrived at Qingdao Forest Wildlife World Rescue Station from pingdu city, Shandong Province.
The number of Siberian tigers is scarce and their whereabouts are secret, so it is very difficult to investigate and study in the field. However, in the past 20 years, WCS scientists have overcome many difficulties and created many miracles in the research and protection of Siberian tigers. Using advanced radio telemetry technology, WCS scientists have successfully tracked more than 60 wild Amur tigers in the Russian Far East, and obtained a large number of precious field data, which revealed for the first time important scientific issues such as the community structure, feeding habits, reproduction, death and its relationship with humans and other species, which effectively promoted the development of Amur tiger protection. With the active efforts of the Russian government, WCS and other international animal protection organizations, the number of Siberian tigers in Russia has increased by 10 times in the past 50 years, reaching a record 400-500.
1On May 29th, 993, the State Council banned the import and export of tiger bones in the Circular on Prohibiting the Trade of Rhinoceros Horn and Tiger Bone. It is forbidden to sell, buy, transport, carry or mail tiger bones; Cancel the medicinal standard of tiger bones and prohibit the use of tiger bones. China was once the country with the largest demand for tiger products in the world. The ban issued by the China government has curbed market demand and effectively prevented the extinction of wild tigers, which has been appreciated by the international community.
From June 5th to1October, 2000, the International Symposium on the Restoration of Wild Tiger Population in Northeast China was held in Harbin, which initiated the international cooperation and protection of wild tigers in China. Based on the plan of restoring the wild Amur tiger proposed in this seminar, with the joint efforts of Jilin Provincial Forestry Department and WCS, a new nature reserve-Jilin Hunchun Amur Tiger Nature Reserve was established in 200 1 and 12, and it was successfully upgraded to a national nature reserve three years later. From June 5, 2003 to1October 25, 2003, Jilin Hunchun Nature Reserve took three photos of wild Amur tiger with far-infrared camera provided by WCS, which was the first time that China took photos of wild Amur tiger. Coupled with detailed field monitoring data, they irrefutably proved to the world that the wild Siberian tiger still exists in China. This is a great progress in the protection of Siberian tigers in China, and it is also an extremely precious protection achievement, which adds confidence to the future protection work. So far, five precious photos of wild Siberian tigers have been taken in Hunchun area.
The trapping of ungulates has always been a great threat to the survival of Siberian tigers, and there have been many cases of trapping or accidental injury. In order to crack down on illegal poaching and protect the Northeast Tiger and its prey, WCS has organized anti-poaching propaganda and set up clearing activities in important distribution areas of Northeast Tiger such as Heilongjiang and Jilin for many times since 2000. With the decrease of illegal hunting tools such as hunting sets and clips, the activity information of Siberian tigers in Hunchun area is also increasing. In order to strengthen anti-poaching law enforcement and wildlife resources monitoring, WCS took the lead in introducing the advanced MIST (Management Information System) law enforcement patrol system in Hunchun Nature Reserve, Jilin Province in 2008, and provided relevant software, technical training, equipment and financial support. Through systematic patrol, the managers of nature reserves can know the distribution and threats of Siberian tigers and their prey in time, reduce poaching and human interference, and make the wild protection of Siberian tigers in nature reserves reach a systematic and standardized level.
