The rape and murder of a student studying in the United States leads to reflection
Everyone knows about the Yao Yu incident. More than a month has passed since the incident. The media's interest in it has slowly cooled down, and people's attention to this matter is also decreasing day by day. However, the anger and grief in my heart are increasing day by day. My compatriot, a young girl, suddenly fell. What I can't tolerate even more is the indifference of the Chinese people, the numbness that has nothing to do with themselves, and the worry that it may bring trouble to themselves...
Yao Yu, 23 years old, is from Heilongjiang. He came to the United States just 2 months ago, holding a student visa and preparing to study in law school. The incident happened around 9 pm on May 16, which was not very late. The incident took place in the downtown area of ??Flushing, Queens, New York, USA, and was not a remote area. At that time, Yao Yu was coming out of the supermarket for shopping and encountered a Mexican drunkard. He was grabbed by the assailant, pushed down in front of a nearby house, and raped. Yao Yu screamed and resisted, and the assailant picked up an iron pipe and hit Yao Qi on the head about 50 times. Yao Yu's skull was shattered, and the assailant inserted an iron pipe into the back of her head. The criminal was immediately arrested. According to local media reports, when the police discovered that the gangsters were dragging Yao into an alley, two or three people stood by to watch, but then turned around and left. Not only that, witnesses saw that when Yao Nu screamed for help, many people passed by, but no one stopped to rescue or call the police, watching helplessly as the tragedy happened. Flushing is an area where Chinese people gather in Queens, New York, USA. Walking on the streets of Flushing is like walking in any small town in northern China. In recent years, it has gradually become a gathering place for Asian immigrants, especially immigrants from mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea and other places. The crime took place in a parking space next to a house on 41st Street, a busy area in Flushing.
US media pointed out that after reviewing street surveillance video footage, the police found that the suspect, who was suspected of being drunk, fled in a hurry after the incident, but when he saw the police car, he immediately hid in the alley consciously and tried to The murder weapon was discarded in the grass, so it was analyzed that he committed the murder consciously. Police have charged the suspect with attempted kidnapping, sexual assault, and possession of weapons. On the streets of a busy city, a living life was brutally raped and murdered in full view of the public. Every Chinese living overseas who learned of this tragedy was shocked, stunned, saddened, and angry. On June 15, 2010, I made a special trip to New York, USA. At around 8 p.m., Mr. Li Tiecheng, president of the New York Heilongjiang Association, and I drove to the Flushing neighborhood of Queens. We walked along the route that Yao Yu took on the day he was killed and took photos. The next day, I rushed to Washington to attend the graduation ceremony of my classmates' master's and doctoral degrees. Three days later, I returned to New York. At around 8 p.m., I walked from the store where Yao Yu bought groceries after get off work to the place where she was killed. I added some photos and added I learned from President Li Tiecheng about the situation he had. The following images kept recurring in my mind:
(1) A young girl came to New York with the ardent expectations of her poor, elderly and sick parents, and the longing for a better future.
(2) In order to repay the debt he owed when he came to New York and to raise tuition fees, he worked hard in a nail salon.
(3) On the way home from get off work, the breeze blew her hair gently. She hummed a song and moved forward briskly, without any premonition that danger was around her...
(4) Being attacked, beaten and dragged to a roadside parking lot by brutal thugs.
(5) The helpless girl struggled with the brutal gangsters and called for help. Many Chinese people passed by, some even stopped to watch, and some passed by in a hurry. No one helped her, no one called the police, and no one even called the police. Shout to scare away the gangsters.
(6) The thugs used iron rods to crush the girl’s skull. The blood dyed the bustling streets red and stung people’s eyes.
The inhumane thugs raped the bloody victim... the beautiful girl was tortured and killed...
(7) The mother who was heartbroken after hearing the bad news was bedridden because she could not bear the blow. My old father...
(8) The world changed from color to black and white in an instant...
I felt the stinging pain in my heart... I couldn't think about it, I didn't dare to think about it, I thought I don't understand - such a horrific tragedy happened in a crowded street before it was completely dark. An innocent girl was beaten, dragged, hit on the head with an iron rod and raped by gangsters in front of so many compatriots... …What are those people doing who happen to be passing by? How can you bear to remain indifferent after seeing such a scene? If the person who was violated was your brother, sister or even your daughter, would you walk away with the mentality of "it's better to do less than to do more"? Do those who witnessed the tragedy but turned a blind eye feel uneasy every time they think about it? Will you have sleepless nights? Can't eat? My compatriot, my little fellow countryman, Yao Yu, who was in the Mood for Love, withered away in an instant. How does this make your parents face the days without you?
If the Chinese passing by at that time could stand up and stop the murderer, if someone could call the police immediately, what if... what would be the outcome of the matter? ! The occurrence of any tragic incident reflects the bottom line of moral conscience of universal values, regardless of nationality or situation.
Stop complaining that Chinese people have no status abroad; when you are so indifferent to your compatriots, no one will look down on you! The Chinese people who are getting richer are becoming more and more willing to be bystanders of social morality. This is how sad it is for us Chinese descendants of Yan and Huang! Every Chinese knows that perhaps what happens to others may one day happen to them, and it is possible that one day they or their family may be left alone and helpless. What should you do at this point?
I heard: Some Chinese parents educate their children like this - if you encounter a bad person, never shout "help". If you shout "help", you will die. Because when others hear you shouting like this, they will hide away or cover their heads with a big quilt. You have to shout "Fire" so that everyone will run out, even the big ones with their heads covered will jump up and run out. They're not running out to save you, but the bad guys might be scared away.
Yao Yu’s tragic experience is neither the first nor the last, and it is very likely to happen to our brothers and sisters next time, or to ourselves. What should we do?
My compatriots who still have bright red blood flowing in their bodies, my compatriots who have a "Chinese heart", please reflect on your behavior and at the same time do not let the "Yao Yu" incident happen again. Let us unite and defend our conscience! Defend our dignity! Defend our right to exist! Only by uniting can we protect ourselves and our brothers and sisters. Always remember======Unity is strength!
