3. Course Details

This is a four-year degree program in which one year of overseas study is divided into Middle Eastern countries and European countries, where you can use your chosen language. It combines compulsory language elements with cultural, political, historical, literary, linguistic and religious studies options in both countries. Language course units range from absolute beginner to advanced level in Arabic. There is a wide and growing choice of optional course units; students are advised by a personal tutor when selecting these teachers (one to three times per year).

Includes the following courses: Modern Languages, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. In the first year, the balance between the two languages/cultures is equal; thereafter, the balance can change to one-third/two-thirds in favor of one or the other. Native speakers will be involved in language teaching at all levels, and cultural understanding is an inherent part of language learning. Your studies are supported by the Language Center's multimedia facilities. Staff there can also put you in touch with students who are native speakers of your chosen language.

Multicultural Manchester offers excellent general opportunities for working with speakers of other languages ??outside the University of Manchester and for pursuing European and Arabic cultural interests (e.g. public lectures, societies, cultural events, etc.). For some European languages ??we offer unique independent language learning courses.

This carefully designed course supports your studies in the first two years and is supervised by a personal tutor. You can help focus on areas you find difficult and receive constructive personal feedback. A year abroad provides you with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in fascinating countries in the Middle East and Europe. You will have the opportunity to acquire spoken language skills, experience the modern lifestyle there and promote your personal development. Students are eligible for financial support from the University of Manchester to cover tuition fees at Middle Eastern institutions.

Teaching methods include seminars, lectures, texts, guided independent study, conversation courses (native speakers) and language laboratory work. Group work is common. Language teaching focuses on the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening comprehension. Cultural teaching is part of all language teaching through the use of communicative techniques. Some language courses are held in the Multimedia Language Center, and students can also study individually.

4. Annual Course Introduction

Almost all course units are assessed through a combination of coursework (e.g. essays, group projects/presentations) and written and oral examinations.

Course content in the first year: The first year of study will focus on intensive language learning. It also has a core course on the contemporary Middle East, which promotes the development of learning and IT skills.

Year 2 course content: In the second year you will continue your language learning, increasing your reading of authentic texts in both languages ??and choosing from a wide range of relevant subjects according to preference.

3rd year course content: Your third year of study is spent abroad under approved conditions. For more information about your time abroad, see our study abroad page.

Course content in Year 4: The fourth year covers advanced language courses, a choice of courses on a variety of specialist topics in two chosen cultures and an optional thesis on an approved topic of your choice.
