Kaiyuan Hsee was born in Shanghai, and he was amblyopic since childhood. According to the regulations at that time, he didn't have a chance to receive a formal education. Later, his parents begged someone to open the back door, so he had a chance to go to school with normal children.

After graduating from high school, he would have been "assigned" to a neighborhood office or a street factory. Because his family was still good and his parents didn't let him work, he stayed at home and looked for psychological translations to read according to his own interests.

After graduating from high school, Kaiyuan Hsee studied at home for four years, and watched his middle school classmates finish college. He thought that this experience was a waste of time at that time, but in retrospect it was a turning point in his life. Because those days not only cultivated his firm character, but also made him have an experience and view beyond his peers on the behavior of himself and others.

In order to give him a chance to study, with the help of a relative, Kaiyuan Hsee and his parents immigrated to Hawaii, and finally got into the University of Hawaii.

When entering school, Kaiyuan Hsee chose psychology as her major. This is also a major that is difficult to find employment in the United States, and parents are quite opposed to it, fearing that he will not find a suitable job in China and still have no job in the United States. But because of Kaiyuan Hsee's insistence, they finally respected Kaiyuan Hsee's own choice.

When she was an undergraduate, Kaiyuan Hsee began to do psychological experiments and write papers. In the year of graduation, he put forward to apply for graduate students in "Ivy League" schools, but he was not optimistic about the teachers. A teacher told him that no student in the psychology department of the University of Hawaii had been admitted to an Ivy League school for many years. But in the end, Kaiyuan Hsee got admission notices from 1 famous universities, including Harvard, Yale and Princeton. In addition to his excellent academic performance, his experiments and papers played a very important role in his application. Finally, Kaiyuan Hsee chose Yale University.

At Yale, Kaiyuan Hsee studied behavioral science in a broad sense, including emotional intelligence. The first paper on EQ in the world was written by his tutor, and the second one involved him. A few years later, Kaiyuan Hsee received a doctorate in psychology from Yale University. When I graduated in 1993, a large number of students majoring in psychology could not find a job, but he was not among them, but was hired to teach in university of chicago booth school of business, a world-class university.
