Shi Zhaoyuan's original Malay name was Kampung Sungai Gajah Horse Body. After being reclaimed by immigrants from Fuzhou, China (mainly from Gutian County), it became a prosperous residential area.

Kampung Sungai Gajah Horse Body literally means "the riverside village where the elephant died" in Malay. According to legend, two elephants waded here, one of which was crushed by tin mine and fell into the mud of Dingding River at low tide. People tried their best to rescue them, but they had to give up. However, another elephant refused to leave his companions, and finally they all drowned at the high tide. Setia Kawan ("faithful friend") got its name from this.

At the end of 19, tin ore and rubber were the main local trade products. They were carried by elephants, loaded and unloaded on steamboats and transported to Penang. In the1870s, smallpox broke out here. Because China thought that changing the place name could improve the geomantic omen, the local people changed the place name to Setia Kawan, that is, "faithful friend", in order to achieve harmony between man and nature and comfort the dead elephant.

1903 In September, 363 Fuzhou Christians, including 72 women and 55 children, emigrated to ShiZhaoyuan to get rid of the poor living conditions in Fujian. They were led by priests Lin and Liu and settled in today's Kampong Ge. Most of these immigrants work in remote rubber plantations. Fuzhou immigrants also dug four wells in11930 s and11950 s, and these relics still exist today, but they are no longer used.
