Yao Lian at BEYOND's 1991 Life Contact Concert
Her name is Angelita Li
Angelita Li (李安奇) was born in a musical family in Hong Kong in 1970. Her mother is a professional singer and her father is a well-established piano player in the Hong Kong music scene. As a band leader, Angelita started her singing career when she was nine years old. She worked as the lead singer and backup singer for commercial songs from time to time. Angelita officially stepped onto the stage in 1989. In 1991, she also performed for Beyond at the "BEYOND Life" held at the Hung Hom Coliseum in Hong Kong. Responsible for backing vocals in "Contact Concert".
Angelita moved to Bangkok in 1990 and officially started her life as a full-time singer. In the past five years, she has collaborated with almost all the top local musicians and recorded many albums, including her solo album "The Eyes" of Love".
Five years later, Angelita accepted another new challenge, which was to move to L.A. There, she discovered that her true musical preference was Brazilian music. Angelita had the opportunity to get along with a group of famous Brazilian musicians in L.A. , and they tour together from time to time. With her language talent, she has also perfected her Portuguese language in the past few years.
In 1996, Angelita was invited back to Hong Kong to record a Mandarin jazz standard album "Miscellaneous" under the name Unique, which received unanimous praise. By 2000, Angelita officially returned to Hong Kong to develop her unique style. She is not only praised by jazz people, but also attracted the attention of the pop music world. Recently, she has made guest appearances at the concerts of George Lam, Lam Min Yee and Eason Chan.
Who would have imagined that during the Beyond concert in 1991, Unique, who had just turned 20 that year, was already the designated harmonist and harmony arranger for the two concerts. I remember watching the video of the Beyond concert I just bought at my friend's house. The second half of the song "Wish I Could" was sung by two harmonies each for a short section. Although the one who was not the protagonist was The little sister who enlivened the audience sang her part. My friend and I said the same thing almost at the same time: "Wow, you have such good singing skills that you can be the lead singer yourself, so you don't need to do harmonies with others!" From then on, she left a deep impression on me. I also remember a name: Li Anqi.
Who could have imagined that five years later, in 1996, Unique, who is of Filipino and Chinese descent, would actually have her own solo album in Hong Kong (she had previously released two albums in Thailand), It is also the first Chinese jazz album produced purely locally in Hong Kong!
Behind Unique, all her accompanists are Hong Kong's top jazz musicians. Including Guitar: Eugene Pao (Bao Yizheng), Guitar: Tommy Ho, Piano & Harmonica: Dave Parker, Piano: Robert Seng, Bass: Paul Candelary, Drum: Anthony Fernandes, among which Paul and Anthony are members of Bao Yizheng's jazz trio members, a dream combination with a super lineup, plus a stunning female singer.
The most unexpected thing is that all songs are filled with Chinese lyrics and sung in Mandarin. He played the familiar jazz standard, including Lullaby of Birdland, Misty, Satin Doll, Take the A Train, Foggy Day, Round Midnight and Funny Valentine. He re-sung the songs that are very familiar to everyone and gained recognition. It can be said that he is a Considerable difficulty. For example, the original song of "To Love or Not to Love" is "Lullaby Of Birdland", which has been sung by countless singers and is well-known in the streets. The original singer is a lounge singer in the Philippines and is not a jazz singer. But this Big Band Jazz Style paired with Unique's voice is very attractive. The slow songs among them exude the unique style and charm of nostalgic hits such as Loveless Love and Lover's Tears, combined with the improvisational spirit and superb performance skills of jazz, which are surprisingly beautiful and moving. The lively and playful or fast versions of the songs are also performed well and have achieved success. This sparkling, brilliant jazz album.
