Where is Jiaxing in ancient times now?
Jiaxing is the birthplace of the Majiabang culture in the Neolithic Age. 7,000 years ago, ancestors in the city were engaged in farming, animal husbandry, fishing and hunting. In the Spring and Autumn Period, this place was named Changshui, also known as Zhangli, and Wu and Yue competed here. During the Warring States Period, it was included in the Chu territory. Qin established Youquan County and Haiyan County, which belonged to Kuaiji County. During the Han Dynasty, the sea was boiled for salt and the fields were farmed for grain. During the Three Kingdoms period, the State of Wu occupied the east of the Yangtze River and established Yanguan County as the southern border of Youquan County and the western border of Haiyan County. In the third year of Wu Huanglong's reign (231), it was "grown by wild rice from Quan". Sun Quan, the emperor of Wu, considered it auspicious and changed the name from Quan to Hexing. In the fifth year of Chiwu's fifth year (242), it was renamed Jiaxing. During the Jin Dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Jiaxing was further developed, and "when one year old, several counties would forget about hunger". In the Sui Dynasty, the Jiangnan River was excavated, that is, the Grand Canal from Hangzhou to Zhenjiang via Jiaxing, which brought the benefit of irrigation boats to Jiaxing. In the 10th year of Emperor Xuanzong's Tianbao reign (751), the eastern part of Jiaxing County and part of the jurisdiction of Haiyan, Kunshan and other counties were established as Huating County. There were 27 farms in Jiaxing during the Tang Dynasty. "Three villages in western Zhejiang, Jiahe is the largest." Jiaxing has become an important grain-producing area in southeast China. There is a saying that "a harvest of Jiahe will make Jianghuai prosperous; a loss of Jiahe will make Jianghuai thrifty." . During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, the Wuyue State established the Kaiyuan Prefecture in Jiaxing, which governed the three counties of Jiaxing, Haiyan, and Huating. This was the first state-level government established in Jiaxing. In the fifth year of Tianfu (940), the emperor of the Later Jin Dynasty, Xiuzhou was established in Jiaxing and controlled by Jiaxing, Haiyan, Huating and Chongde counties at the request of Qian Yuanguan, King of Wuyue. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Xiuzhou was renamed Jiahe County. In the first year of Qingyuan (1195) of Ningzong in the Southern Song Dynasty, the county was promoted to a prefecture, and later it was changed to Jiaxing Army. In the 13th year of Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty (1276), the Jiaxing Army was renamed the Jiaxing Prefecture's Appeasement Department and promoted to the Jiaxing Road General Manager's Office. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Jiaxing's economy was relatively developed, and it was known as "the best in western Zhejiang due to its rich population and abundant wealth". Foreign trade is frequent at Zhapu, Kanpu, Qinglong and other ports, and shipping is booming. In the fifth year of Xuande in the Ming Dynasty (1430), the northwest border of Jiaxing County was analyzed to be Xiushui County, the northeastern border was analyzed to be Jiashan County; Haiyan County was analyzed to be Pinghu County; Chongde County was analyzed to be Tongxiang County. Jiaxing Prefecture had seven counties under its jurisdiction, known as one prefecture and seven counties. In the next four to five hundred years, the Jiaxing prefecture and county system basically remained unchanged. At that time, based on the development of agriculture and handicrafts, the commodity economy became increasingly prosperous. Cotton and silk were sold north and south, and as far away as overseas. The silk in Wangjiangjing Town, Jiaxing, was known as "the world's clothing and quilts", and Jiashan had "the endless harvest of Xitang yarn". According to the proverb, Tongxiang Puyuan Town's silk production is "10,000 pieces per day", which is famous far and wide. "Jiaxing Prefecture Chronicles" written by Hongzhi of the Ming Dynasty records: "Jiaxing is the largest city in the west of Zhejiang Province" and "the most important city in the east of the Yangtze River". At the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing army invaded and carried out massacres here. Jiaxing suffered heavy losses and lost its prosperity. In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government carried out tax reform and rectification, and built many seawalls along the Hangzhou Bay. Only then did Jiaxing's social economy gradually improve and the towns regain prosperity. In the 10th year of Xianfeng's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1860), the Taiping Army captured Jiaxing and established the Ting Palace as the local military and political leadership. After the mid-Qing Dynasty, due to imperialist plunder and feudal exploitation, Jiaxing's economy and urban appearance gradually declined and withered. On November 7, 1911, the Revolutionary Party of 1911 liberated Jiaxing and established the Jiaxing Military and Government Branch. At the beginning of the Republic of China, Fucun County was abolished and renamed Jiahe County, and later renamed Jiaxing County.
