Dr. Thompson is a professor of curriculum and teaching at the College of Education of Iowa State University and the founding director of the Center for Teaching Technology. She received her doctorate in education from the University of California, Santa Barbara at 198 1.

Dr. Thompson's research focuses on using technology to improve students' learning. Her early work focused on using technology to create an active problem-solving environment for students. Recently, she devoted herself to developing the effective application of technology in teacher education and using technology to support the systematic reform of teacher education. Her research was supported by the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy, Exxon Corporation and the US Department of Education. Dr. Thompson was the chairman of the Teacher Education Information Technology Association, and now he is the editor of the Journal of Teacher Education Computing. She is the author or co-author of many journal articles and books, including the book Fundamentals of Educational Computing.

Dr. Thompson is a consultant of the national teacher education project, studying the effective methods of integrating technology into teacher education. She is currently the co-director of the "Technical Cooperation of Teacher Education Updating (TechCo)" project, which is funded by the US Department of Education for three years.
