The Li and Miao people are the long-standing residents of Baoting County. In October 1955, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region was renamed Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, with Baoting under the jurisdiction of the autonomous prefecture.

In December 1958, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture People's Government and the Hainan Administrative Office jointly operated; in the same year, Baoting, Lingshui, Yaxian, and the state-owned Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm merged to form Yaxian. In November 1959, Baoting County was restored and affiliated to the Hainan Administrative Office.

In February 1962, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was restored, and Baoting County was affiliated to the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. In December 1987, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was abolished, and in the same month, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County was established, subordinate to the Hainan Administrative Region. In April 1988, it was affiliated to Hainan Province.

The regional GDP was 4.509 billion yuan, an increase of 6.0% over the previous year. 1.5 percentage points higher than the target expected at the beginning of the year. In terms of quarters, the first quarter had a year-on-year growth of 6.2; the second quarter had a cumulative year-on-year growth of 6.6; the third quarter had a cumulative year-on-year growth of 7.2; and the fourth quarter had a cumulative year-on-year growth of 6.0.

In terms of industries, the annual added value of the primary industry was 1.718 billion yuan, an increase of 6.0% over the previous year; the added value of the secondary industry reached 596 million yuan, an increase of 8.2% over the previous year; the added value of the tertiary industry 2.195 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.5. The proportion of the three industries is 38.1:13.2:48.7.
