About course
This survey course introduces students to important basic materials about human fertility, population growth, population change and population policy. Topics include: human and environmental aspects of population pressure, population history, economic and cultural reasons of population change, environmental carrying capacity and sustainability. Political, religious and ethical issues surrounding fertility have also been paid attention to. Lectures and reading materials try to balance theory and population size analysis with individual and community research. The prospect is global, including both developed and developing countries.
In this survey, students learned important basic materials about human fertility, population growth, population change and population policy. Topics include: population pressure, human and environmental aspects of population history; Population change, environmental carrying capacity and sustainable development of economy and culture. Political, religious and moral issues revolve around infanticide, abortion, contraception, son preference, government coercion, immigration and women's status. These lectures and readings try to analyze the population size and theoretical balance formed by human individuals and the whole society. This view covers both developed and developing countries in the world. The reason for the debate is the influence of medical care and rapid population growth.
