People built Hong Yashan Reservoir around Qingtu Lake, which caused the surface water level around Qingtu Lake to drop, unable to replenish the water source of Qingtu Lake, resulting in the water area of Qingtu Lake decreasing and gradually drying up. By 1959, Qingtu Lake had completely dried up. After drying up, the original Qingtu Lake became a desert. What's more, the desert area is expanding at the rate of seven to ten meters per year, which has dealt a great blow to the local ecology and brought great inconvenience to people's lives. Local residents can't live here anymore, they have all moved away.

The government and people have not stopped the pace of environmental governance, and the desire to save Qingtu Lake has always been in people's hearts. In 20 19, Minqin county government began to restore the environment of Qingtu Lake, first planting trees to control sandstorms, and introduced ecological water12.9 million cubic meters in September. Although a part of it was lost, 8.6 million cubic meters of water was injected into Qingtu Lake. With the moisture of water, vegetation is revived, everything breeds life, the ecology of Qingtu Lake is balanced again, and Qingtu Lake is alive again.
