Fuller Collins building

For decades, I drove up and down Mile Avenue near Union Mile Park in Cleveland without noticing Fuller Collins' house. Located at the northwest corner of the intersection of this street and East 100 Street. 1920, a series of commercial buildings on Miles Street began to rise, almost hiding it from sight. This house was built in 1866 by Silas Fuller, a carpenter in Chaglin Falls, Ohio. Two stories high, red brick veneer, front and rear wings, Italian design, popular in America 1840 to 1880. Italian-style houses are mainly famous for their wide eaves with bucket arches and high and narrow windows, especially on the first floor. There are many subtypes of Italian design, the most common one is the simple sloping roof subtype, which is characterized by a rectangular box-shaped house with sloping roof and usually a central dome. Fuller Collins Tower is a less common subtype, called the gable roof. According to the American Housing Field Guide, only about 10% of the only Italian houses in the United States belong to this type.

As the name implies, the sub-type of gable roof has gable roof, which is similar to the Greek revival house, and this sub-type draws inspiration from it. Silas Fuller only owned the house for three years and sold it on 1869. Why Fuller sold the house after such a short ownership period is still unknown. Fuller is married and still raising children. As a matter of fact, I don't know whether Fuller and his family ever lived in this house, because so far no directory records have been found listing the places where he lived in those ten years. By the time of the 1870 census, silas Fuller had moved to Potac County, and the only family member that could be found in that census lived separately from him in Kiuga County. Emmett F. Collins is the second owner of Fuller Collins' house and lives in it with his second wife Abigail. Emmett is a farmer. Collins and/or his wife Abigail may have made major changes to the appearance of Fuller Collins' house during their ownership, making it more spectacular on Miles Avenue. Collins lived to 1880 and died; His widow Abigail lived to 1898.

Fuller Collins' house was located in Newburg town during the period when it was owned by Fuller Collins' family. It is located on a narrow three-acre land in front of Miles Avenue; The surrounding communities are basically rural. His family rented a room at Fuller Collins' house, 1895 to 1898. The Daytons were the last owners of Fuller Collins' house. Since the neighborhood near Vashawa community (today's Slavic village) in Poland began to be inhabited by Eastern European immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century, this house was transformed into two families and lived by tenants during the Great Depression. In the mid-20th century, when this area was in a period of racial transition, this house continued to be used as the residence of two families. However, in 2000, Fuller Collins' house was bought by a contractor. It seems that he renovated the house and changed it into a single-family house. A few years later, this commercial building in front of the door was demolished from 1920. Almost at the same time, the house was bought by the present owner.
