Fuller Collins building
This house was built in 1866 by Silas Fuller, a carpenter in Chaglin Falls, Ohio. Two stories high, red brick veneer, front and rear wings, Italian design, popular in America 1840 to 1880. Italian-style houses are mainly famous for their wide eaves with bucket arches and high and narrow windows, especially on the first floor. There are many subtypes of Italian design, the most common one is the simple sloping roof subtype, which is characterized by a rectangular box-shaped house with sloping roof and usually a central dome. Fuller Collins Tower is a less common subtype, called the gable roof. According to the American Housing Field Guide, only about 10% of the only Italian houses in the United States belong to this type.
As the name implies, the sub-type of gable roof has gable roof, which is similar to the Greek revival house, and this sub-type draws inspiration from it. During the period of 1825- 1860, Silas fuller learned carpentry from his father and brother when the Greek revival style was popular. For this reason, he may find this type of Italian residence easier to design and/or build, or he just likes it better than other Italian types. According to Craig Bobby, a local architectural historian, in addition to the above elements of Fuller Collins Villa, it is also worthy of attention, because its door and window covers combine flat and arched lines, with dripping shapes at both ends to take away sediments. In addition, it is worth noting that the two-story bay with windows on the west side of the house is about 1890, and its top has been transformed in a non-Italian way. In addition, the house once had a covered one-story porch, extending along the south and east of the front wing of the house. This may be the original, or it may be a substitute for the reconstruction of the side bay and nearby.
Silas Fuller only owned the house for three years and sold it on 1869. Why Fuller sold the house after such a short ownership period is still unknown. Fuller is married and still raising children. As a matter of fact, I don't know whether Fuller and his family ever lived in this house, because so far no directory records have been found listing the places where he lived in those ten years. By the time of the 1870 census, silas Fuller had moved to Potac County, and the only family member that could be found in that census lived separately from him in Kiuga County. What is even more puzzling is an article about Fuller, which appeared in The Merchant of Cleveland Plain on February 8th, after 190 1 year. It says that from 1865 to1883-including the year when the Fuller Collins Building was built-Fuller traveled about 27,000 miles in the Great Lakes, and he was interested in collecting antique clocks, which is also the theme of this article. Therefore, why did Fuller build Fuller Collins' house, whether the Fullers ever lived in this house, and if so, why did they leave after such a short ownership period? This is still a mystery.
Emmett F. Collins is the second owner of Fuller Collins' house and lives in it with his second wife Abigail. Emmett is a farmer. When he was nearly 60, he lived on real estate. 65438+In the 1960s, Newburg Village began to transform into a steel production center in northeast Ohio. He bought and sold plots of residential areas near mills and other factories, and developed at least five residential areas of his own in villages and towns, becoming rich in the process. These areas provide housing for many factories and factory employees, many of whom are immigrants. The first immigrants from Newburg factory came from England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and Ireland. Later, they came from Bohemia, Hungary, Poland and other Eastern European countries. 1873, the industrialized area of Newburg was merged into Cleveland and became the constituency of the latter city, which was called the "iron constituency".
Collins and/or his wife Abigail may have made major changes to the appearance of Fuller Collins' house during their ownership, making it more spectacular on Miles Avenue. As mentioned above, these changes may include modifications to the two-story windowed compartment and front porch, and may also include modifications to doors and window covers. Collins lived to 1880 and died; His widow Abigail lived to 1898.
Fuller Collins' house was located in Newburg town during the period when it was owned by Fuller Collins' family. It is located on a narrow three-acre land in front of Miles Avenue; The surrounding communities are basically rural. All this changed after more than twenty years (1898- 192 1 year), when the next family, the Dayton family, owned the house. Mathilde Dayton is a boarder. His family rented a room at Fuller Collins' house, 1895 to 1898. He inherited it according to Abigail Collins' will. 1909 Before Mathilde died, she and her husband Eli rented the house to their son William. They used these three acres of land to build sub-regional residential areas on the east and west sides of New Dayton Street (today's East 100 Street). At about the same time that Dayton was founded, this former Newburg district-1907 became Colet Village and merged into Cleveland. Unfortunately, Fuller Collins' house is no longer in the country.
The Daytons were the last owners of Fuller Collins' house. Since the neighborhood near Vashawa community (today's Slavic village) in Poland began to be inhabited by Eastern European immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century, this house was transformed into two families and lived by tenants during the Great Depression. In the mid-20th century, when this area was in a period of racial transition, this house continued to be used as the residence of two families. However, in 2000, Fuller Collins' house was bought by a contractor. It seems that he renovated the house and changed it into a single-family house. A few years later, this commercial building in front of the door was demolished from 1920. Almost at the same time, the house was bought by the present owner. According to the best information available on the Internet, Fuller Collins House is now used as a collective home for disadvantaged adult men.
