Genesis 1:1-31 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The earth is empty and formless. The face of the abyss is dark. The Spirit of God moves over the waters. God said, let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. There is evening and there is morning. This is the first day. God said, let there be air between the waters to divide the water into upper and lower parts. God created the air and separated the water below the air from the water above the air. And so it was. God called the air heaven. There is evening and there is morning, which is the second day. God said, let the waters under the heaven be gathered together into one place, and the dry land shall be exposed. And so it was. God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of waters sea. God saw that it was good. God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, herbaceous plants bearing seed, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it, according to their kind. And so it was. So the earth produced grass, herb bearing seed according to his kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it, according to his kind. God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, which was the third day. God said, Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night, and to serve as signs to establish seasons, days, and years. And let it shine in the sky and give light on the earth. And so it was. So God created two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the smaller light to rule the night. And he made the stars. He arranged these lights in the sky to give light on the earth. Rule over day and night, distinguish between light and darkness. God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, which was the fourth day. God said, “Let the waters abound with living things, and let birds fly above the earth and in the sky.” God created the great fish and every living creature that the water teems with, according to their kind. And he made every kind of bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good. And God blessed them all, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the sea. Birds will also multiply on the earth. There was evening and there was morning, which was the fifth day. God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds. Cattle, insects, and wild beasts, according to their kind. And so it was. So God created the wild animals, each according to his kind. livestock according to their kind. Every creeping thing on the earth is according to its kind. God saw that it was good. God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds in the air, over the livestock on the ground, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.” And have dominion over the fish in the sea, over the birds in the sky, and over every living creature that moves on the earth. God said, Behold, I give you every herb yielding seed that is on the face of the earth, and every tree yielding fruit with seed in it, for food. And to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the air, and to every living thing that creeps on the earth, I give them green grass for food. And so it was. God saw everything he had made, and behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, which was the sixth day. Genesis 2:1-25 All the heavens and the earth were created. By the seventh day, God’s work in creating creation was completed, so He rested from all His work on the seventh day. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work of creation. The origin of the creation of the heavens and the earth was this in the day when Jehovah God created the heavens and the earth. There was no grass in the field, nor did the herbs of the field grow, because the Lord God had not yet sent rain on the earth, and there was no one to plow the land. But a mist rises from the ground and moistens the land. Jehovah God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living being named Adam. The Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east and placed the man he created there. The Lord God made out of the ground every tree to grow, which was pleasant to the sight and whose fruit was good for food. Also in the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided into four channels. The name of the first was Pison, which surrounded the whole land of Havilah. There was gold there, and the gold of that land was good. There were also pearls and onyx. The name of the second river is Gihon, which surrounds the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river was Hidekel, and it flowed east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to work it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded him, saying, You may freely eat of any tree of the garden. But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day you eat from it you will surely die. The LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper. Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man calls each living creature, that is its name. The man gave names to all the livestock, to all the birds in the air, and to all the beasts of the field. It’s just that the man didn’t meet a spouse to help him. The Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon him, and he fell asleep. So he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh again. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man formed a woman, and brought her to the man. The man said, This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh, let me call her woman, because she was taken from man. Therefore a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. The couple were naked at the time and were not ashamed.
