David Austell, director of the International Service Office of new york University, recently sent an e-mail to members of the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) to alert universities in the eastern United States to a telephone scam targeting international students and scholars.
David Austell reported the recent experience of an international student who was cheated in new york University. The student received a call calling himself "USCIS", and the calling number was the same as the free service number published by USCIS. The student was told that he didn't fill in the I-94 card correctly when he entered the country after his recent trip abroad. USCIS found this mistake when he recently reviewed his OPT application.
The caller can not only tell the student's name, birthday, address and contact number accurately, but also confirm the last four digits of I-94 card with him. The student was told that he was involved in criminal proceedings and had to leave the country immediately. When the student explained that he had not left the United States recently, the caller told him that unless he remitted money to USCIS within two hours, he would be deported within 24 hours, and there was nothing USCIS could do. The student still had doubts and told the other party that he had to check with the office of international students and scholars of the school first, but was told that once he hung up or suspended the phone, USCIS could no longer help him. The other party also said that USCIS had sent a court summons to its foreign address, but did not receive any response.
In a panic, the student remitted $65,438+0,600 yuan according to the telephone instructions, and was told that an extra sum of money was needed to get the temporary I-94 number, and then took this number to the office of the US Federal Customs and Border Protection at JFK Airport for further formalities.
This incident has been confirmed as a scam by the US Immigration Service. USCIS said that the agency will never charge individuals by phone in any name, and there is no business that can never be continued once the phone is hung up. At present, it is the peak period for the majority of international students in the United States to apply for OPT and H 1-B work visas. USCIS especially reminds international students and scholars to be alert to this scam of impersonating USCIS. When you receive any phone call or email about immigration status, don't panic, first confirm the relevant information with the office of foreign students and scholars of the school. If you encounter such a scam, you can report it to the fraud prevention department of USCIS.

Children who travel to Wan Li are worried about the safety of foreign students abroad, which is a heart disease for domestic parents. According to the website of the Education Office of the German Embassy in China, there have been two consecutive violent incidents in Coton, Germany, in which German right-wing extremists attacked German students. The education and consular officials of the Chinese embassy have gone to the local area to make representations to the German side, demanding that the German side strengthen public security and protect the personal safety of students studying in Germany. The local police, schools and municipal authorities attach great importance to this and promise to strengthen public safety measures and punish criminals.
While fully safeguarding the interests of me and the overseas students in China, the Embassy also reminds the overseas students that they must raise their awareness of self-protection and pay attention to personal and property safety. In case of personal attack, try to seek protection from others and call the police as soon as possible so that the police can deal with it in time; It is best to travel together at night, take the road with bright lights and avoid taking remote alleys; If you suspect that someone is following you, go to a crowded place as soon as possible and call the police in a public place if necessary; Avoid disputes with others and personal attacks; I hope the students are United, friendly and caring for each other. Once someone is attacked, other students should lend a helping hand and report the situation to the local China Student Union and the Education Office of the Embassy in time, so as to properly handle the incident in time. Experts studying abroad also remind the vast number of international students that while strengthening their awareness of self-protection, they must keep in touch with their parents at home and solve their worries!
