How was the Hongze Lake levee built?

Hongze Lake is a typical water-passing lake, which is prone to floods when there is abundant rainfall. The lake relies on the Hongze Lake levee on the east coast as a barrier. The levee starts from Matou Town, Huaiyin District in the north and reaches Jiangba Town, Hongze County in the south, with a total length of 67 kilometers and a width of 50 meters, almost all of which are made of basalt strips. The levee was built in the fifth year of Jian 'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty (200 years), and it has been more than 1800 years. Built by Chen Deng, governor of Guangling, it was originally named "Gaojiayan" with an initial length of 30 Li, which is the second largest ancient weir in Sichuan after Dujiang weir. Embankments were originally earth dikes, but later they were brick dikes and stone dikes. It took 17 1 year for the stone embankment to be basically completed from the eighth year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1580) to the Qianlong period in Qing Dynasty. The stone dike adopts pile foundation technology, adopts the wave prevention method of connecting stones and biting iron pots, and is built according to the principle of breaking waves and preventing natural flow. At the same time, five water reduction dams will be built on the dike line to discharge water. The dam construction planning of Hongze Lake levee and the engineering technology of vertical breakwater dam represented the highest level in the world at that time. This long dike is a flood control barrier in the lower reaches of Huaihe River and is known as the "Great Wall on Water".
