With the rapid economic development in the reservoir area, the water quality of the reservoir has deteriorated year by year. Eutrophication of water quality is one of the main ecological and environmental problems that menlou reservoir is facing at present, and the development of reservoirs towards eutrophication is also quite fast. Eutrophication is a manifestation of organic pollution in water. Severe eutrophication will destroy the structure of natural aquatic ecosystem, accelerate the deterioration of water quality, make water lose its due function, and seriously affect economic development and residents' quality of life. Therefore, the treatment of eutrophic water bodies and the restoration of comprehensive functions of water bodies have become one of the central issues in freshwater ecology research.

In 20 16, Yantai municipal government set the goal of "ensuring that the water quality index of menlou reservoir reaches the second-class surface water standard and the total nitrogen index reaches the advanced level of similar areas in the whole province within five years, and strive to achieve the five-year goal in three years".
