The Origin of World Refugee Day

Under the joint promotion of the UNHCR established in 1950 and the UN Refugee Convention promulgated in 195 1, the world refugee security system was established. This system is used to cope with the impact of population movement caused by the Second World War and its aftermath, and to encourage countries to accept refugees by advocating refugee rights.

1967 further supplements the UN Refugee Convention, and the protection systems established in many parts of the world have effectively promoted the implementation of the Convention. ?

1On June 20th, 974, the African continent adopted the African Refugee Convention and decided to designate this day as "African Refugee Day" every year. So as to arouse the international community's wider concern about the refugee problem).

On 4 February 2000, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 55/76, in which it noted that 2006 marked the 50th anniversary of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, and the Organization of African Unity (African Union) agreed that International Refugee Day and African Refugee Day on 20 June could coincide. Therefore, the General Assembly decided to designate June 20th as "World Refugee Day" from 200 1.

Natural disaster refugees refer to people who are forced to leave their homes due to earthquakes, severe floods and droughts. They often return to their countries of origin through temporary relief.
