The longest river in New Zealand. Originated in the mountainous area south of lake taupo in the middle of North Island, it flows out near Taubo Town at the northeast end of the lake, flows through Hamilton in the northwest and flows into tasman sea. It is about 425 kilometers long. It is navigable from the estuary to Cambridge 130 km. The upstream water flows rapidly, and many hydropower stations have been built. The downstream valley is developed in irrigation and is an important animal husbandry area.

In the middle of the North Island. The upper reaches of the Tongariro River originate from Mount Ruapehu in tongariro national park. It flows north through lake taupo and huka falls, turns northwest and flows into tasman sea. It is 425 kilometers (264 miles) long. The main tributaries are Waipa River and Putu River. There are many lakes and lagoons downstream. There are several hydropower stations in the reach from Taupo to Calapiro. The artificial lake on the river is a famous entertainment area.
