It borders Urad Middle Banner to the east, Alxa Left Banner of Alxa League to the west, Hangjinhou Banner and Dengkou County to the south, and Mongolia to the north. Historical evolution

Urad is the name of a Mongolian tribe, meaning "craftsman". In 1952, the Urad Central and Rear United Banner was established. The Chaoge Banner was established in 1970 and its name was changed in 1981.

In March 2019, the Ministry of Water Resources announced the first batch of counties (districts) that have met the standards for water-saving society construction, and Wulatehouqi was on the list.
