Rubins conducted her undergraduate research, HIV-1 integrated with Salk Institute's biological research in infectious disease laboratory. She analyzed the mechanism of HIV integration, including HIV-1 integrase inhibitors and the whole genome analysis model of HIV integration into host genome DNA. She obtained her doctor's degree from Stanford University, and developed the first model of smallpox infection with Rubins and colleagues from the US Army Institute of Infectious Diseases Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also developed a complete map of pox virus transcription and studied the interaction between virus and host using both in vitro and animal model systems.
Rubins accepted the position of a principal researcher at the whitehead Institute of Biomedicine (MIT/Cambridge, Massachusetts) and led a laboratory to study viral diseases, mainly affecting Central and West Africa. The work in Rubin's laboratory focuses on the interaction between poxvirus and host pathogens and the regulation of transcription virus mechanism, translation and attenuation of host cell mRNA. In addition, she has conducted research on transcriptome and genome sequencing (filamentous viruses Ebola and Marburg) and a cooperation project between LassaFever and the US military to develop and treat Ebola and Lassa viruses.

Rubins was selected as 2 groups of 14 NASA astronauts in July 29. She graduated from astronaut candidate training. Her training includes International Space Station (ISS) system, extravehicular activities (EVA), robot, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and field survival training. Rubins was selected as the flight engineer of International Space Station Expedition 48/49. In July 216, she became the 6th woman in space when she started the ms-1 mission.
