Baihetan Hydropower Station is the second cascade hydropower station in the lower reaches of Jinsha River, located in ningnan county, Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province. It is the largest hydropower project under construction in the world with the highest technical difficulty. Its function is mainly to generate electricity, and it also has comprehensive benefits such as flood control, sand blocking, improving downstream shipping conditions and developing shipping in the reservoir area.

The normal water level of the reservoir is 825 meters, with a corresponding storage capacity of 20.6 billion cubic meters. Baihetan Hydropower Station is equipped with 16 hydro-generator units independently developed by China, with a single unit capacity of one million kilowatts ranking first in the world, with a total installed capacity of160,000 kilowatts. The average power generation for many years is 60.24 billion kWh.

On June 28th, 20021year, the first batch of units of Baihetan Hydropower Station in Jinsha River was officially put into operation, and the project is scheduled to be completed in 2022. After completion, it will become the second largest hydropower station in the world after the Three Gorges Hydropower Station. On August 2, 2022, Unit 7 of Baihetan Hydropower Station successfully passed the 72-hour trial operation and officially put into commercial operation.
