How does eTRS work
Electronic Tax Refund Scheme for Tourists (eTRS) replaces paper tax refund forms, allowing you to apply for consumption tax refund electronically. In this way, you don't have to fill in different tax refund forms provided by different stores, and it is easier to get tax refund.
You can get the tax refund by using the electronic tax refund system for tourists in two ways.
1. Select credit card/debit card as voucher. Show the same bank card to the retailer every time you shop. This card will keep all shopping records related to you. To apply for tax refund at the airport, just swipe the selected card at the electronic tax refund self-service counter. All your consumption details can be transferred together, and you can get the tax refund according to the instructions of the service desk.
Please note that when you choose a credit/debit card as a voucher, you don't have to use this card to pay. You can still pay by cash or other credit/debit cards.
2. If you don't have a credit/debit card or don't want to use a bank card as a voucher, you must ask the retailer for an electronic tax refund when shopping. When you apply for tax refund at the airport, you only need to scan all the electronic tax refund forms one by one at the electronic tax refund self-service counter. Then follow the instructions of the service desk for tax refund.
You can get a tax refund in three simple steps:
1. At the airport
If you plan to check the purchased goods, you must apply for a consumption tax refund before you can check your luggage. Goods entrusted for purchase cannot be refunded.
Because Singapore Customs may ask to check the goods you bought before processing the tax refund application. You can apply for tax refund at the electronic tax refund self-service counter in the departure hall of the airport (before going through the departure formalities).
If you plan to take the goods you bought with you, please take them to the electronic tax refund self-service counter in the departure transit hall (after going through the departure formalities) to apply for tax refund.
2. At the self-service counter of electronic tax refund
When you arrive at the information desk, please swipe your passport and choose a credit/debit card as the electronic tax refund voucher. Then pull up all your consumption details. Alternatively, you can scan the electronic tax refund forms one by one to display the details of various expenses.
After transferring the consumption details, please apply for the consumption tax refund according to the tips of the electronic tax refund service desk. At this stage, you need to choose credit card or cash to receive tax refund (for tourists departing from Changi Airport). If you leave the airport in Sri Lanka, you can choose to refund the tax by bank check or credit card. When everything is ready, the service desk will issue a notice. Please check the notice to confirm whether you need to go to the customs inspection office, and the customs staff will further inspect the goods you purchased.
Warmly remind you to arrive at the airport early to ensure that you have enough time to apply for consumption tax refund and commodity inspection.
Get a tax refund
When you leave Changi Airport, you can choose to receive the tax refund by credit card or cash. If you leave the airport in Sri Lanka, you can choose to refund the tax by bank check or credit card.
For cash tax refund, please bring a notice to the central tax refund office located in the departure transit hall (after going through the departure formalities) to collect cash.
If you choose a credit card to receive the tax refund, you can board the plane after submitting the tax refund application at the electronic tax refund service desk. The refund will be deducted from your designated credit card within 10 days.
If you choose to receive the tax refund by bank check, you must fill in your name and mailing address on the notice and put it into the check tax refund box. The bank check will be sent to you in 14 days.
Please note that due to the handling fee, the actual amount refunded to you will be less than the amount of tax refund you enjoy. The details of the handling fee will be displayed on your electronic tax refund form.
Remarks: You must leave the country with your goods within two months from the date of purchase, or within 12 hours after the application for consumption tax refund is approved. Within two months from the date of approval of the tax refund application, you must receive the consumption tax refund from the certified central tax refund counter operator.
