The dam site of the Three Gorges Project is located in Xilingxia reach of the main stream of the Yangtze River and Sandouping town of Yichang City, Hubei Province, with a controlled drainage area of about 6,543,800 square kilometers. The hub project is a first-class project, which consists of river dam, power plant, navigation structure and Mao Ping Creek protection works. The drainage retaining structure is designed according to the once-in-a-thousand-year flood, with a peak flow of 98,800 cubic meters per second.

According to the once-in-a-million-year flood check, the peak flow is 124300 cubic meters per second. The seismic design intensity of the main buildings is seven degrees.
