The origin of Jiuquan's name

Jiuquan is named after "there are springs under the city" and "its water is like wine".

Jiuquan was one of the four counties in Hexi in Han Dynasty. Since ancient times, it has been a traffic fortress from the Central Plains to the Western Regions and an important town on the Silk Road. The terrain is high in the south and low in the north, tilting from southwest to northeast. From east to west, it is the main peak of Qilian Mountain, Taolai Mountain, Daxue Mountain, Maye Mountain, Altun Mountain, Danghe Mountain and Saishiteng Mountain, which belongs to continental arid climate.

The name of Jiuquan is also related to Huo Qubing. After Huo Qubing defeated the Huns, he should celebrate the victory. In this case, drinks are essential. At that time, Gansu was thousands of miles away from Guanzhong, the ruling center, and drinks were extremely scarce. On the way, Huo Qubing met a spring, so Huo Qubing poured the drink into the spring and let all the soldiers drink it together. This is the origin of the name Jiuquan.

Extended information: Suzhou was established in the present Jiuquan city from 602 to 605 AD, and it was not until the early Tang Dynasty that the Li track was set (6 19). Today, Jiuquan City is once again temporarily placed under the jurisdiction of Zhangye County, Ganzhou. After 6 19 AD, Jiuquan has been in the position of Suzhou.

Suzhou in the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties broke away from the rule of the Tang Empire and its successor, the Central Plains Dynasty, and was ruled by Zhang Gui Rebel (Dunhuang Kingdom), Ganzhou Uighur, Cao Shi Guiyi Army, Xixia and other regimes. The title of Suzhou has been relatively stable and has not been replaced.

In A.D. 1227, Mongolia destroyed Xixia and established Ningxia Province on the old land of Xixia. At this time, Suzhou, as one of the old places of Xixia, was also under the jurisdiction of Ningxia Province.

Gansu province was established in 1287, replacing the original Ningxia province. Since then, the land of Suzhou has been under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province. Note: Gansu Province is named after Suzhou (now Jiuquan City) and Ganzhou (now Zhangye City).

Suzhou District, where Jiuquan City is located, successively belongs to Jiuquan County, Fuping County, Liangzhou, Xiliangzhou, Ganzhou, Suzhou, Ningxia Province, Gansu Province, Shaanxi Province and Gansu Province.
