The school was founded in 1956, formerly known as Nanning Water Conservancy School. 1970 was renamed Guangxi Hydropower School. In 2002, it was upgraded to Guangxi Vocational and Technical College of Water Conservancy and Electric Power. The school is a national demonstration (backbone) vocational college, a national high-quality water conservancy vocational college, a national water conservancy higher vocational education demonstration college, a high-level vocational college and a high-level professional construction unit in Guangxi, a demonstration vocational college in Guangxi, a modern apprenticeship pilot unit of the Ministry of Education and the first batch of modern apprenticeship pilot units in the autonomous region.

The school has a strong faculty, with more than 380 full-time and part-time teachers/kloc-0, led by experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, ministerial-level scientific and technological talents, national water conservancy vocational education teachers, national ideological and political education teachers, outstanding scholars and national technical experts in Guangxi, chief scientist of Guangxi water conservancy and chief expert of Guangxi TRIZ innovation methods. The school has ten secondary colleges, offering 55 majors and five joint undergraduate majors, covering eight professional groups, including water conservancy and hydropower construction engineering, power system automation technology, intelligent manufacturing and modern information technology, with more than 20,000 full-time students.
