How to plan the three stages of your career? Just read this book.

I recently read a book called Vision-How to Plan Three Stages of Career, which gave me a new understanding of my career study. I plan to talk about my feelings and experiences in six articles. Now share with you the first article: What are the three stages of a career and the key points of each stage?

the author of this book, Brian? Featherstonehaugh, the global chairman and CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Interactive, has provided a series of practical career planning tools and methods for people at all stages of the workplace with his 3-year career insight and 2-year career planning research experience. Ogilvy & Mather Interactive is also a world-renowned enterprise company. Its founder is david ogilvy, who is known as the "godfather of advertising" and has a book Confessions of an Advertiser, which is world-renowned.

In the book, the author divides his career into three stages, each of which lasts about 15 years, namely:

The first stage: adding fuel and making a strong start;

the second stage: focus on the long board and reach the high point;

the third stage: optimize the long tail and continue to exert its influence.

1. Add fuel and get off to a strong start

The strategy at this stage is: step into the workplace and meet new discoveries, and there is no long journey ahead to reserve workplace fuel. The so-called workplace fuel refers to an important factor that can promote career development. The book lists three fuels: transferable skills, meaningful experience and lasting relationships. (This content will be introduced in detail in the next article)

The author gives eight specific strategies at this stage:

1. Use the time you are studying to reserve early forms of workplace fuel;

2. Make a job-seeking battle plan;

3. Actively participate in campus recruitment;

4. Apply online efficiently;

5. Make good use of your contacts and list people who can help you, such as mentors, alumni, friends, parents, etc.

6. Do some homework before meeting the contact person;

7. Be mentally prepared, and it is difficult to find the first job.

8. keep exploring.

Second, focus on the long board and reach the high point

This stage is the stage of really giving play to advantages and achieving achievements, so at this stage, we need to focus on asking ourselves three questions: What am I good at? What do I like? What does the world need?

At this stage, quite a few people may have become managers, and even some people have become or will become executives, so the author gives suggestions to managers and executives respectively.

Six suggestions for new managers are as follows:

1. Always pay attention to your appearance, attitude and manners;

2. express your vision concisely and repeat it constantly;

3. Select team members as soon as possible;

4. Every meaningful business problem is best solved in a smaller team;

5. Act like a trusted solver;

6. You don't need to know everything, but you should consult more people.

Five suggestions for senior executives are as follows:

1. Be honest and fit in with the company culture;

2. Intellectual curiosity and agility;

3. Experience in improving business performance;

4. Truth, self-awareness and balance;

5. vitality and enthusiasm.

Third, optimize the long tail and continue to exert influence

The martyrs are full of courage in their twilight years. According to time, by this time, it has almost entered the ranks of retirement, but the author believes that taking the initiative to shape the third stage will bring rich returns. As the famous anthropologist Bessent said, in the past century, the life span of the population has increased by 3 years, which is not to prolong the "old age", but to add an extra stage before we get old. Therefore, the third stage still exerts its influence for a long time, and life is in your own hands.

The author puts forward three suggestions for people at this stage:

1. Experiment and accept the challenge voluntarily;

2. Start a business and open up a new territory;

3. Manage the learning curve and keep it relevant.
