How to read picture books for children?
Recently, I heard a reader say that there is a kind of picture book reading robot, which can read picture books to you as long as it is held in front of you. Indeed, everyone should have bought a lot of picture books at home, but how to read them has become a big problem. Sometimes children need to read another book, and sometimes they need you to read it again and again. If there is a robot to help, it is naturally excellent.
However, I don't want to hand over the task of reading picture books to robots. Besides reading is a good opportunity to keep close interaction with my daughter, robots are definitely not as good as me. I still have a lot of experience about how to read picture books with my children.
Reading picture books has many advantages, from language to emotion, from science to art, from social skills to logical thinking. Children who grow up in picture books will certainly gain a lot. Today, I mainly talk to you about how to help children learn spoken English by reading picture books.
Children's language development is related to language input, which requires not only quantity but also quality.
Although children can't speak when they are born, by the time they go to school, the language differences between children are already great. Their vocabulary is different, and their sentence structure and language logic are also very different.
Scientists have found that children's vocabulary when they enter school can predict their future academic performance to some extent. So, what makes children's language development so different? In fact, this is related to the language input that children get when they are young.
American researchers recorded the spoken vocabulary of children aged 7 months to 3 years in 42 families. Wait until they are 9 years old, and then test their reading and other learning abilities. The researchers found that some mothers like to talk to their children and can say 30 thousand words a day. These children have higher reading ability when they grow up. Some mothers don't talk much to their children, and they speak almost seven or eight thousand words a day. These children's reading ability has been slightly worse since they entered primary school.
However, language input is not just the number of spellings. If you say "go away and play" to your child 10 thousand times a day, it will not have any positive effect on your child's language development.
We should not only spell the number of languages, but also pay attention to the quality of children's language input. Language quality can be considered from many aspects, such as the diversity of vocabulary, the complexity of sentence structure, the emotion contained in language and so on.
One experiment is particularly interesting. The researchers analyzed the "reference transparency" when parents spoke to their children, and found that the higher the reference transparency of parents' words, the greater the vocabulary of children might be after three years. What is reference transparency? It mainly means that when you encounter a new word, you can quickly get reliable information related to its meaning.
For example, if you boast that a person has a lot of knowledge in front of children, you find that children are confused and don't understand what knowledge means. At this time, you further explained: "Knowledge is the knowledge of many things. For example, you went to the zoo today and learned that pandas are not cats, but actually bears. This is knowledge. I taught you yesterday that there are 365 days in a year, and every four years is 366 days. This is also knowledge. " At this time, the child has an understanding of the slightly abstract word knowledge.
When hearing a new word, the child will refer to the current clues to comprehensively judge the meaning, including your voice, expression, posture and what he sees in front of him. This is how children learn new words. If the meaning is more abstract, you can give him a better word to refer to transparency. Explain it like the example I gave above, and the child will understand it better. ?
To give children more language input, but also a variety of vocabulary, rich sentence structure, but also pay attention to transparent citation, then how to say? In addition to conversations with children in daily life, picture books are a very convenient tool.
Excellent picture books are catchy, with strong sense of rhythm, changing sentences in repetition, gripping stories and clever collocation of pictures and texts, which are very suitable for language learning materials. Using picture books to help children learn languages, one of my clever tricks is to treat parent-child reading as a stage play and "play" with children.
1. You are an actor and your children are directors.
First of all, picture books can help children practice recognizing pronunciation, such as distinguishing syllables and listening to rhyming words. So I will read some rhythmic books to my children, such as nursery rhymes.
When reading aloud, deliberately lengthen the tone to help children understand the sound, then pause between each word to help children feel that a word is a semantic fragment, and finally emphasize the tone in rhyme. For example, reading "A Garden of Vegetables Thinning" is like this: "Green Head? Radish? Say (pause) Your Majesty, Red Head? Radish? (Pause) When is Mom? Mom. " Read a few more words in this way, and the child will soon find the rhyme rule and will read along.
Children like the rhythm in language, so repetition is very important, which is beneficial to children's language ability, but invariable repetition is not good. In order to increase reading interest, it is best to change different tones or sounds when reading different words. Look, I said I want to be an actor by reading picture books, right?
Why did I say "Let the children be directors"? Because I saw many problems in the message area: when reading a book, the child is always disobedient, and sometimes when you look at the next page, he is still looking at the picture on the previous page; Sometimes you want to finish a story well, but he pesters a detail and keeps asking why; Sometimes when you are serious, he goes to play something else. In fact, these problems are easy to solve, and the "director" has the final say.
In my family, my daughter likes some books, but she only likes some of them, so I will accompany her to read this part. Sometimes time is tight, she keeps asking and answering questions and can't finish reading the book, but I won't say, "Don't ask so many questions, let's finish reading the book first."
I will answer her questions patiently before continuing my studies. Children's attention patterns are different from those of adults. Their attention is like a stray light, and they can notice all aspects of their surroundings. Adults' attention is more like a spotlight, and they always want to focus on one thing.
Please remember that when parents and children read, let the child be the director and we will follow his interest. When a child is interested, he is willing to imitate, understand and think, so that he can really benefit from reading.
Step 2 give the microphone to the child
The microphone is given to children to encourage them to talk more. Parent-child reading should be an interactive process, and you can't always listen while reading. Interactive reading can make children practice language more, and children can decide where and how to read according to their own interests and abilities, which can promote the development of children's language ability more quickly.
However, how to transmit the microphone is also learned. If you finish reading a book with your child, ask him, "Tell me, son, what does this book say?" Is to educate children to eat well? "If you ask this question, it is estimated that the baby will be petrified on the spot and have no idea how to pick you up.
How can I change the subject? Usually I will discuss the words and story lines in the book according to the children's interests. My children and I often talk about such topics:
First, pick up a book and see what is painted on the cover. Let the children guess whose story this book is about and what he might do.
Then, when reading in the middle, don't turn the page first, encourage the children to guess what will happen next. In this process, children need to recall the known plot, observe the picture, pay attention to the changes before and after, infer the next development according to various clues, unconsciously exercise their reasoning ability and reserve space for their imagination.
For example, when reading the picture book "Part V", the injured little penguin walked into a door and came out with a new look; The bandaged bear walked into that door and came out brand new; It's frog's turn to go in. What will it be like? Children predict first, then read, and enjoy participating.
In addition, I will inspire my child and help her to relate the contents of the book to her life. You have seen the little animals in the book and met the same thing as the hero. What was your mood at that time? You can talk about it.
In the process of dialogue, taking care of the development of children's language ability can start with "multiple choice questions", such as "Is the bird falling, is it a pig or a puppy?" Then you can "fill in the blanks": "Who was the mother when the bird went to find her mother?" You can also give your child a short answer, "What if the bird hasn't found its mother yet?" Or the idea of scaffolding for children. On the basis of the child's current language level, provide some questions that he can try his best to answer to help him improve.
If the child's words are incomplete and inaccurate, you can repeat them with accurate and complete sentences. One is to make sure that you understand children correctly, and the other is to give children a good language demonstration.
Finally, I want to remind you not to talk to death. There are two situations that are easy to talk to death and can't get meaningful feedback from children. One situation is closed-ended questions, asking "yes" and "yes", and children may not listen to your questions and answer "yes" and "right" casually.
There is also a vague question. The most common question is "What does this book say?" And "What should you learn from pigs?" It makes it difficult for children to pick up. You don't have to get any truth to read.
What is the significance of picture book reading to children's language development? I want to explain it briefly with an experiment.
20 15 some scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to find direct evidence that reading picture books is related to language development. The researchers conducted a parent-child reading survey on 19 children aged 3-5. Then, they put headphones on the children, let them listen to stories and measure their brain activity.
Guess what? Children who read more at home are more likely to activate specific brain regions that support semantic processing when listening to stories. These brain regions are crucial for future oral expression and real reading.
The Family Education Collection of Dr. Wei has nearly 80,000 readers since it was launched in March this year. Visiting the message area, I often receive questions from elite parents from all walks of life, feeling: among the parents in our column, it is really hidden dragon and crouching tiger!

Extracurricular extended reading
Recommended children's picture books: The Garden Becomes Better and The Fifth Kind.
This picture book is all the examples cited in my article today. The Garden Becomes Better is a picture book adapted from northern nursery rhymes. It tells a story about the thinning of vegetables in a vegetable garden, the fight between radish and lotus root, and the scuffle of many vegetables.
The fifth is five injured toys, sitting in rows, waiting in fear to go to another room. In fact, at the other end of the room is a doctor who can repair toys. Two picture books can train children to overcome unknown expectations and fears. Among them, "Fifth" won the picture book award of Bologna International Children's Book Fair.

Thinking problem no.45
Dr. Wei
Today's thinking question is: What tips do you use to help children improve their language ability when reading picture books? Welcome to share!
Parents of the 44th gold medal: cricket
The thinking problem of the last issue is: Talk about what irrational parenting thinking you have been influenced by. I will award the 44th gold medal to @ Rudder Rudder.
She said that before the child caught a cold, his grandparents asked him to take cold medicine and antibiotics, relatives and friends asked him to do pediatric massage, and the hospital doctor had to give him an injection.
Finally, she saw the official account of WeChat, and many authoritative pharmacists and doctors also made professional consultations and consulted many books. Finally, she learned to distinguish the types of colds, stick to the common cold for seven days to half a month, pay attention to children's rest, eat more foods rich in vitamin C, and take antipyretics when the fever reaches 38.5 degrees Celsius.
In this way, in the face of the child's cold, she is calmer and less anxious than before. I think this is the representative of parents with critical thinking.
